Introducing our Academic Quality Action Plan

Kia ora koutou

A key part of Unitec’s Renewal Strategy is our Academic Quality Action Plan which directs and tracks our response to the External Evaluation and Review (EER). Our plan has now received NZQA approval and we are focused on delivery.

While the Category 3 outcome from the EER was disappointing, we are confident the past 12 months have brought positive changes across the institute, and we’re seeing the results in our improved staff and student feedback, via NPS scores and surveys. The Academic Quality Action Plan aims to continue this momentum and ensure we remain on track with our renewed focus on student success and supporting our staff.

The plan brings together elements of our success strategies for Priority Groups, the International Code of Practice, and all recommendations from our EER report. It will be a key component in achieving our target of parity for all students by 2022 and preparing for our next EER review.

To achieve our goals we need the support of our whole organisation, across our support teams and Schools, our governance and management.

You can view a summary of the plan and our progress on Sharepoint.

Some of the key features are:

Improving academic governance and oversight of all aspects of our academic quality management systems, such as programme evaluations, student surveys, and the operations of our academic committees
Ensuring our Priority Group Success Strategies (Māori, Pacific, Under-25, and International) are fully operationalised and maintain the support of stakeholder communities
Setting and achieving targets for student success across all Schools
Better understanding and monitoring of our students’ progress, through tracking indicators such as attendance, early grades, and access to support services, to ensure we can provide the right support as early as possible

All Schools and many support teams will need to review and adapt their 2019 Action Plans to incorporate the Academic Quality Action Plan. It is a top priority for Unitec and will require some reprioritisation of existing work. It will also require a high level of collaboration as most actions depend on the work of many teams across the institute.

The plan and our progress will be updated each month. It is ordered in line with the EER recommendations. As you can see, a lot of work is already underway and progressing well. Percentage progress is against measurable actions, and where more actions are added in future, the percentages may change. Not all sub-actions are listed here, but a detailed view of every action and associated timelines will be available along with our next monthly report.

If you have any questions or feedback on the plan, please share these with either Luan Rose or myself. We intend to continue developing and refining our approach and your input is appreciated to ensure the plan makes sense. I’m also very happy to come and speak with your teams about the plan – please let me know.
