Password: 1234qsI In the nine and ten year old class, we’ve been working hard since coming back from Fall Break on all new units! In Literacy, nine year olds are learning about the different genres and beginning to write a story in the genre of their choice. Ten year olds are learning all about biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Furthermore, they are researching a historical event of their choice and preparing interview questions to ask someone above the age of 30 who lived through their chosen historical event. In math, nine year olds are learning to divide by one digit numbers. One of the most exciting things that has happened in our class over the last week is that we began our very first science unit. We are learning all about natural resources, to ask scientific questions, and to create investigations to answer our questions.
During our Literacy block, we often begin by journal writing. At the beginning of the year, we wrote for 2 minutes and have increased the amount every few days. Today, we wrote for a full 17 minutes! It’s a blast to see all of our writing stamina increase. As a whole class, we’ve been working on reading the book Wonder. We are all anxious to complete the book and find out what happens. In addition to diligently working on academics, our class has been really focusing on community and how we can better cultivate it in our class. As an educator, I am a big believer that by fostering community in the classroom, students are better set up to succeed academically and socially. We are learning to better encourage, support, and respect one another every single day.
