LATEST NEWSGlobal study predicts more than 50% rise in chemotherapy demand by 2040 A new study led Dr Brooke Wilson predicts that between 2018 and 2040, the number of patients needing chemotherapy each year will rise from 9.8 million to 15 million globally – a 53% increase. The researchers call for a significant expansion of the chemotherapy workforce to deliver optimal treatment by 2040. Brooke is affiliated with the Kinghorn Cancer Centre, Ingham Institute and UNSW Sydney. Pancreatic cancer research featured by Cancer Institute NSW Six researchers reflect on how the legacy of the 2017 Premier’s Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research is influencing their work in NSW, including Dr Marina Pajic, Garvan Institute and UNSW Sydney. A Rare Possibility For Ovarian Cancer This year in Australia, just over 1500 women will be diagnosed with an ovarian malignancy. Of these, just a tiny percentage will receive a diagnosis of one the disease’s rarest sub-type: mucinous ovarian cancer. UNSW PhD student and TCRN member Nicki Meagher, is determined to expand the boundaries of what we know about this rare disease. Anticancer Fund The anti-cancer fund supports clinical trials aimed at reducing recurrence rates for cancer patients treated with curative intent. Deadline: 16 June 2019 (letter of intent) PC4 Training Award The objective of the award is to promote a greater understanding of the primary care needs of cancer patients and survivors, encourage research in this area and build capacity by encouraging early and mid-career researchers to undertake research in primary care in cancer. $5000 is available. Deadline: 23 June 2019 Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Grants Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) support medium to long term industry-led collaborations to solve industry problems and deliver tangible outcomes. Deadline: 1 July 2019 AWARDS, TRAINING AND RESOURCESResearch Methodology Seminar Series The Ingham Institute is pleased to introduce the Research Methodology Seminar Series. The Weekly Seminar Series will commence Thurs 13 June 2019 at 4-5pm with sessions 1-9 video-conferenced to Campbelltown Hospital. When: 12 x Weekly sessions from 13 June UICC young leaders program UICC aims to nurture aspiring young cancer control professionals to become successful leaders in cancer control and the wider global health community. Through the programme, UICC will facilitate opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, for networking and connecting with experienced leaders, and the chance to engage and participate in recognised international events. There are eight categories, including a new Supervisor of the Year Award. Deadline: 21 June 2019 Multicultural Health Award Consider nominating for the Multicultural Health Communication Awards. The awards are conducted biennially and recognise excellence in multilingual health communication across NSW Health and Health-funded NGOs. Deadline: 28 June L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards The 2020 Awards will designate five outstanding women researchers in the Life Sciences, each working in one of the following regions: Africa and the Arab States, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America & North America. The Awards will be given on March 2020 in Paris to the five women selected by an international jury. Each Laureate will receive €100,000. Frontiers Technology CAG Frontiers Technology is a newly established Clinical Academic Group of Maridulu Budyari Gumal (SPHERE). The Group exists to bridge the gap between the rapid development of healthcare technology and the uptake of new technology within the healthcare environment. CONCERT The Centre for Oncology Education, Research and Training (CONCERT) is a translational research centre program funded by the Cancer Insitute NSW. CONCERT exists to bring together the knowledge and expertise of cancer health professionals and researchers to facilitate translation of research generated evidence into practice to achieve better outcomes for those affected by cancer. Cancer CAG The Cancer Clinical Academic Group (Cancer CAG) brings together clinicians and researchers from three universities, four cancer services (with six major treatment facilities) and three Medical Research Institutes. Our combined research strength spans the translational medicine spectrum of bench to bedside and health service delivery.
