October 1, 2021 Congress Extends Government FundingYesterday, both chambers in Congress passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to extend government funding until December 3rd, 2021, avoiding a government shutdown. The Senate passed the CR by a vote of 65 – 35 while the House of Representatives passed it by a vote of 254 – 175. President Biden signed the bill into law shortly after passage in the House. In addition to keeping federal agencies funded at current levels through December 3, the bill includes $6.3 billion in funding for Afghan refugee resettlement and $28.6 billion for disaster relief following recent hurricanes and wildfires impacting the nation. The extension gives lawmakers time to reach a final agreement on Fiscal Year 22 spending levels while working on other issues like raising the debt ceiling, passing the bipartisan infrastructure bill, and finalizing a reconciliation bill that includes President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda.
