Latest news from SLSNZ - November 2019 No Images? Click here SPECIAL NOTICE Sunscreen Announcement SLSNZ were only advised yesterday that Consumer NZ testing took place, and that the SLS sunscreen had not passed the UVB testing component . . . so today’s media coverage took us by surprise. We are concerned about the Consumer NZ report that states the SLS sunscreen failed broad spectrum UVB protection requirements and that the label does not deliver what it says it will ... We are taking this seriously and we are urgently working with our supplier Zenith Distribution to get answers. The test results and information supplied to us from Zenith has been reviewed by SLSNZ Medical Director, Gary Payinda. The sunscreen passed the SPF50 claim and still provides a high level of broad spectrum protection at SPF 40 for UVA/UVB testing – anything "above SPF30 is sufficient and adequate". More information will be sent out in a separate email tomorrow and we will keep you updated. LIFESAVING NEWS 24 People Home for Christmas! We're not into the full swing of patrol season yet across the country and Surf Lifeguards (including some of our nippers) have already made 24 rescues! That’s 24 lives saved and 24 people who will be home for Christmas, thanks to our SLS volunteers. You can read about some of the amazing rescues below. Rips continue to be a major hazard on our beaches so learning and sharing the 3Rs Rip Survival Plan is paramount. We're also finding that the public don't know to call 111 and ask for the Police if they see people in trouble in the water - we need to get that message through too . . . of course the safest place to swim is always between the flags. However, what is truly alarming is that between January 1 - October 31 2019, 25 people have died on NZ's beaches compared to 23 for the entire calendar year in 2018 - with some of the busiest beach days still to go over the Christmas period that is not a good sign. Thank you to all our Surf Lifeguards, Volunteers and Clubs - the work you do saves lives as well as families and communities across Aotearoa. Patrol Statistics as at 11/11/2019. Waikuku Nippers "Real Life" Rip Rescue Waikuku Nippers Ana White, sisters Petra and Jade Lamont and Ruby Thoms, saved Jorja Butler (back), and her friend after they got caught in a rip at Waikuku Beach, Canterbury. Nippers are our lifeguards in the making & we couldn’t be more proud - where else can you learn about beach safety and train in a sport with the purpose of being able to save a life? Photo & story from: Stuff. Friends Grateful The Otago Search & Rescue squad came to the rescue of four people caught in a rip off St Kilda Surf Life Saving Club, Dunedin earlier this month. A great example of the amazing work our volunteers do – even outside of regular patrolling hours. Photo & story from: Otago Daily Times. Rescue Comes with Inflatable Warning Four teenagers blown out to sea on inflatable kayaks & a raft were rescued thanks to the quick-thinking actions of off-duty volunteer Surf Lifeguards from Midway Surf Life Saving Club. Story from: NZ Herald. 3Rs Rip Survival Plan Sharing is caring! With rips being our biggest hazard on Aotearoa's (NZ) beaches, we need to spread the 3Rs far and wide. Every chance we get in media and social media; with the public and with friends and whanau (family). Need Help & Can't If you can't see any Surf Lifeguards on the beach and someone is in trouble in the water, call 111 and ask for the Police as they have a direct line to Surf Lifesaving across the country. Again sharing is caring - we need to spread this message across the country too. #SaveTheMales . . . Coming Soon In 2018, 30% of all preventable drownings occurred on NZ beaches. 40% were swimming. 30% were fishing. 73% of all drowning fatalities were male. (WSNZ Drowning Report 2018) #SaveTheMales . . . coming to a Surf Life Saving Club near you this summer. 2019 Zespri Tairawhiti IRB Development Camp Over Labour Weekend, Gisborne/Tairawhiti held the 2019 Zespri Tairawhiti IRB Development camp at Hick’s Bay, thanks to the hospitality of Ngati Porou SLSC.
