From the editors...

The student newsletter is produced every fortnight by the Internal Communications team so we can share news, announcements, selected events and some requests for help. 

If you wish to communicate around the University, the newsletter is just one way to do that. Please check our Methods of Internal Communication webpage, and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

The next newsletter will distributed on Wednesday 5 October, and the deadline is 4pm on Friday 30 September.

The School of Nursing and Health Sciences is looking for your nominations for Inspirational Student Nurse of the Year! 

This award is part of a series of awards that have been developed to recognise the work of students, teaching, and professional services staff. Find out more and how to make a nomination on the website.

Phishing scams - don't take the bait!

Do you know how to keep yourself safe online? Have you head of phishing and do you know what to look out for? Have you thought about how much information you share online? We’ve lots of tips on these topics in our awareness videos. Take a look at the links and let us know if you’ve any questions.

Olympic medallist visits ISE on city campus

Stephen Milne, a Scottish athlete who contributed to 13 medals out of the 67 won in Rio at the Olympic Games last month, visited the Institute of Sport & Exercise to meet Rector and world-breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont.

Fourth years use beer bottles to exhibit student work

Students from the School of Art & Design are taking art to the public with their novel collective, Selection Box.

Fourth-year Illustration students Jasmine Holt and Kali Wallace ran a competition to get fellow students and budding artists into the public eye by exhibiting their submissions on 60 beer bottles during their event ‘Art on Beer' last Thursday.

The 60 unique bottles, sponsored by Eden Mill and Abernyte Brewery, were revealed in The George Orwell on the night. All proceeds went to the charity HELM.

Dundee dentists shift the behaviour of Perth prisoners

A health coaching initiative developed by the Dental Health Services Research Unit (DHSRU) at the School of Dentistry has led to a significant shift in the behaviour and wellbeing of prisoners at HM Prison Perth.

Life Sciences alumni competed at Rio 2016

School of Life Sciences alumni, Hannah Dines competed at this year's Paralympics in Rio, coming 5th in the Women's Time Trial T1-2 and 5th in the T2 Trike Rider - less than a minute after the winner!

The Support Hub is officially open

Student Rector (and record-breaking long-distance cyclist) Mark Beaumont officially opened the new Support Hub last week. 

The Support Hub aims to cater for a range of support needs for staff and students, and is set to bring together existing services which provide disability, mental health, student funding, counselling and health support across the University.

University Chaplaincy

University Prayers – Tuesdays at 12.30–12.50pm in the Quiet Room
Weekly informal prayers led by students and members of the Chaplaincy Team.

Bible Study – Tuesdays at 12.20–1pm in the Glass House
Would you like to know more about the Bible? You are welcome to join us in our weekly studies in the Glass House in the Chaplaincy. We have been meeting since 1981, although we are not all founder members! Join us and help to keep the group going.

International Families’ Group – Wednesdays at 10am–12pm in the Common Room
You and your pre-school children are warmly invited to meet with other International Students’ Families. We meet during school term time in the Chaplaincy Common Room. This is a good opportunity to meet new friends and practice your English, and the children enjoy playing with toys together (all children must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times).

PhD Welcome Day (28 Sep)

The PhD welcome day, led by the Centre for the enhancement of Academic Skills, Teaching, Learning & Employability (CASTLE), aims to support effective transition to PhD study with a focus on empowering students, developing a professional approach to research and  networking.

Japan Exchange & Teaching Programme Presentation (29 Sep)

The JET Programme is an official Japanese Government scheme which sends graduates to Japan for a minimum of 12 months to promote international understanding and improve foreign language teaching in schools. This presentation will explain everything, including how to apply for your position which is salaried, and includes return air fare.

Dundee Literary Festival (Wed 19 Oct - Sun 23 Oct)

Dundee Literary Festival 2016 is celebrating its 10th birthday in style, pulling in an A-list actor, internationally acclaimed songwriter and a party fit for The Broons and Oor Wullie.

Critically acclaimed writers who will be appearing include James Kelman, Don Paterson and Jenni Fagan. Singer-songwriter Roddy Woomble will be talking about his book, and Liz Lochhead will be joined by saxophonist Steve Kettley for a spellbinding performance. There will also be a tea dance at the Bonar Hall to celebrate 80 years of The Broons and Oor Wullie.

In addition, X-Men and Goldeneye star Alan Cumming will make an appearance to talk about his new memoir, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams. 

Wednesday 19 October to Sunday 23 October, with additional events on 24 September and 25 November.

Research students: make sure your papers are eligible for REF

Calling all researchers! Make sure your papers are eligible for REF by depositing your accepted manuscripts to PURE within three months of acceptance. The Research Services team can provide help with publishing Open Access, compliance with funder requirements, and managing research data management (including drafting data management plans). Make the most of the opportunity to receive support by emailing discovery@dundee.ac.uk.

Get the Dundee Plus Award

In an increasingly competitive jobs market, it has never been so important to get evidence of skills development and the Careers Service is pleased to announce that it will again be providing the opportunity to apply for the Dundee Plus Award.

The Dundee Plus Award is a great way of boosting your CV and getting recognition for activities you do out with your academic life such as part-time work, volunteering, student representation and participation in societies and sports clubs. If you have participated in these or other extra-curricular activities then it’s time to get some recognition.

All successful applicants will receive the Award and their application considered as a potential prize winner.

Male subfertility research - volunteers required

University researchers studying male subfertility, in collaboration with Ninewells Assisted Conception Unit, seek volunteer sperm donors for research and post-graduate teaching. £20 per sample.

Student recruits required for utilisation survey (Oct 2016)

The University requires a number of students to carry out a physical survey. The survey involves walking to various buildings to particular teaching rooms and carrying out a head count every hour from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

The survey will take place weeks commencing 3 and 10 October 2016.  Applicants must be reasonably fit as you will be required to walk long routes! To apply, please email your CV and covering letter to Marianne Kenley. Closing date is Friday 30 September 2016.
