AAA Member Update April 2021

The AAA monthly update is our way of communicating with our members.

Message from the President

It is hopefully becoming more evident as we progress through this year the amount of work the AAA is doing on behalf of its members. A lot of the issues at hand are complex and it will take time to see the results. Rest assured the focus is consistent; assisting with the growth of a successful and sustainable alpaca industry.

Recent announcements in regards to live export pathways for Australian alpaca may to some members feel irrelevant, but this also has a complete industry focus. Apart from the obvious need to meet current demand for Australian genetics, it is important for us as an industry to continue to trade internationally on a longer term basis. In essence, this additional capital will assist us grow the Australian industry.

In an attempt to simplify this scenario; live export trade incomes are the icing on the cake for some businesses. With others, it may just add a little more competition within the domestic market. No matter whether alpaca producers are trading directly or not with export markets, the additional capital can be used for reinvestment directly. If businesses are more profitable they can gain additional finance from other sources, and even more importantly they will attract new entrants into the alpaca industry with their own capital for investment.

It would be difficult to dispute that the Australian alpaca industry needs to keep growing to be more successful and sustainable, so although this latest export pathway is not a silver bullet, it is a great addition to the industry’s future.

Keep safe. Keep well. Enjoy everything alpaca                                                           Brett Fallon, AAA President

In case you missed it - export protocol to Chile

The Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment has confirmed that conditions have been agreed between the department and SAG (Chile) for the exportation of live alpaca from Australia to Chile. The last step before the formal announcement from DAWE is agreement on the translation of the forms.  Commencement of shipments will still be impacted by the availability of flights from Australia to Chile, which may not be available this calendar year.
