Living in Cairns Volume 1, 30 April 2015

From the Mayor...

Welcome to the very first edition of our new-look e-newsletter, Living in Cairns. There are so many great things about life in the Cairns region, one of which is the way our community comes together when the occasion calls for it.

One such occasion was last Saturday. It was wonderful to see so many people attending the various Anzac Day Centenary services around Cairns. It was especially moving to see so many of our youngest generation participate in such an important day. It bodes well for our future that our children take pride in understanding our past.

It was an honour to host a serving Turkish Colonel for Anzac Day and he expressed his delight at receiving such a warm welcome from our city. To hear Colonel Ulutas read Ataturk's Pledge on the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing was an experience that will stay with me. Lest we Forget.

Mayor Bob Manning

Gardens centrepiece

Cairns Botanic Gardens is a step closer to having a new centrepiece, with the structural framework for the new Conservatory now in place.

The Conservatory is set to be the star attraction of the gardens, with a striking and spacious design to complement the picturesque surrounds. It will house and display the gardens' stunning array of ferns, orchids, palms and carnivorous plants.

The design of the building will resemble Cairns' botanic icon, the licuala palm, giving it a uniquely tropical feel that will add to the enjoyment of visitors to the Botanic Gardens. The Conservatory will feature a pond surrounded by a series of landscaped planting areas showcasing native and exotic species.

The project is being funded by Council in conjunction with the Friends of the Botanic Gardens. The new Conservatory is expected to open to the public in October.

Water plan presented

A preferred strategy for water management and infrastructure to meet future needs was tabled at yesterday's Ordinary Meeting of Council.

The Water Security Strategy – Final Report has been prepared by the Water Security Advisory Group (WSAG), a group of community and stakeholder representatives established last year to investigate future water sources.

“Water is our most valuable resource and, with a growing population, shoring up adequate water supply to meet growing demand over the next 30 years has got to be a priority,” Mayor Bob Manning said. “This was a big job that required the expertise of people from a range of stakeholder organisations. I congratulate the group on producing such a thorough report.”

“In the longer term, we still see the potential need for a new dam but the WSAG preferred strategy suggests there are other options that can be implemented in the meantime. Our next step is to thoroughly evaluate each of these initiatives to determine any limitations and impacts,” Cr Manning said. Read more

Turning vacant spaces into vibrant places is the aim of the Urban Spaces program. Council will match newer local enterprises with vacant spaces in the Cairns CBD, to be used as pop-up retail outlets for a short-term, negotiated lease. Registrations are open landlords who are interested in being part of the program, as well as entrepreneurs with unique offerings. Download and submit an application form by 13 May.
