Dear parent of a Fox or STHM student, The unconventional circumstances of this semester have affected many aspects of how we deliver the high-quality, student-centered education that is a hallmark of the Fox School and the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM). This is true for course instruction, and it’s also true with regard to how we account for academic integrity. We take academic integrity very seriously at Temple, the Fox School and STHM. The university’s core educational mission is the development of independent thought and the respect for the thoughts of others, and academic integrity is a key component. With this in mind, we began using the artificial intelligence (AI) program Proctorio for online proctoring for some exams in spring 2020. Your child may have already discussed this platform with you. Prior to this we used one-to-one proctoring services for several years, which came with a cost to the student. Rest assured, online proctoring is a practice that many schools and colleges have embraced for a long time. Currently, in some classes, we have increased online proctoring for exams and testing through Proctorio, which offers a safe and secure way for students to learn and showcase their learning. Proctorio-enabled exams allow our faculty to review a student taking an exam after the fact. Students can be seen and heard, and their desktop is shared to ensure they are not using materials other than what is permitted for the exam. The system only runs during the exam, and it is deleted after the faculty member reviews the exam. Since we have recently adopted the Proctorio platform, we are working with our faculty to help them better understand the tool and to troubleshoot problems. We are also committed to communicating with you about how we will continue to uphold our academic honesty and integrity during these uncertain times. If your student has experienced difficulty in a class, please have them contact their Fox or STHM academic advisor, who can assist them in resolving those issues. The adaptability of our students continues to inspire me. As a parent, you should be proud too. Thank you for your time and take care. Sincerely, Ronald Anderson, PhD |
