Online Tool Teaches Cancer Patients about Sexuality and Fertility

Scientists have developed a web-based educational tool that can help adolescents and young adults with cancer learn more about sexuality and fertility.

Their findings were published last summer in the journal Supportive Care in Cancer.

Two separate programs were created - one covering sexual health and one addressing fertility. Each program offered several modules that included short readings, illustrations, videos, and exercises. Users could also access an online forum to discuss their experiences with peers.

Twenty-three young people with cancer tested the programs. What did they think? And what's next for the programs? Click here to find out.

Vaginal Estrogen Might Relieve Menopause Symptoms for Women with Breast Cancer

Women with a history of breast cancer might be able to manage menopause symptoms with vaginal estrogen, according to a Committee Opinion statement from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

Menopause occurs when a woman's ovaries start producing less estrogen. But some forms of breast cancer are fueled by estrogen, so treatment might induce early menopause to prevent the growth of cancer cells.

Women in this situation are usually advised against hormonal therapy for treatment of menopause symptoms. But vaginal estrogen, a local therapy, might be appropriate for women who have had no relief with non-hormonal treatments, ACOG says.
