Pool safety compliance

Pool owners have until 30 November to make sure their pools meet statewide safety standards. Five years ago, The Queensland Government introduced a single pool safety standard designed to address preventable accidents and drownings, especially among children. The deadline for full compliance is now approaching. If you're unsure whether your pool meets the safety standard, contact a licensed pool safety inspector. More information available on the Department of Housing and Public Works website.

Botanic conservatory open

Earlier this month, the long-awaited Cairns Botanic Gardens Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory opened its doors. Members of the Friends of the Botanic Gardens were invited to be the first to view the spectacular displays of ferns, orchids, palms and more. Replacing the previous George Watkins Orchid House and the Munro Martin Fernery, the new conservatory has been designed to resemble the iconic licuala palm and contains a pathway that meanders through carefully landscaped botanical displays. Butterflies add an extra splash of colour to the setting. The Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory is located within the Flecker Gardens and is open daily from 7.30am to 5.30pm. View more photos
