Prentice warns of government 'belt-tightening' in blunt fiscal speech

In his address to almost 600 business people at a Chamber luncheon on Friday, and on the heels of the government's second quarter fiscal update, Premier Jim Prentice painted a challenging, and at times bleak, picture of upcoming provincial budgets. 

While still signalling a commitment to investing in the public infrastructure our growing province needs and a competitive tax landscape, he noted that it would not be business as usual when planning for oil at $65-$75/barrel in 2015.

Alberta is renowned for its tax competitiveness. Our province boasts the lowest corporate and personal income tax rates of any province, and our small business rate is one of the most competitive in the country. Nevertheless, when it comes to supporting the small business investor through our tax code, we're losing ground. In response, the Chamber is proposing a Small Business Investors Tax Credit to incentivize the flow of capital to small businesses looking to finance their next stage of growth.

The Calgary Chamber's Aboriginal Opportunities Committee is the longest running chamber of commerce committee in Canada devoted to exploring Aboriginal business issues. At its recent meeting, Dwight Newman, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Rights in Constitutional and International Law, gave a presentation regarding the new legal landscape of Aboriginal consultation, and the policy changes that have resulted in Alberta and elsewhere, including discussing the limited contexts in which the duty to consult can verge toward a consent requirement.
