Skills Workshop: Winter 2015

This winter, the Skills Workshop will be running intensive workshops before Semester 2 for students and recent graduates.

Please choose your choice of software training through the registration form. Once a nominated software receives the required number of registrations, registrants will receive a workshop itinerary and a reserved place in the workshop. Reservations are based on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The Skills Workshop runs modelling and graphic software training for the Melbourne School of Design. The goal is to equip participants with the software knowledge to strengthen their design skills. Previous workshops include Rhino 5.0, Grasshopper 1.0, Revit 2014, AutoCAD 2014 and Adobe Suite CS6.

Atrium closure: 4pm-11pm Thursday 14th May

The Melbourne School of Design is a proud supporter of the annual Australian Institute of Architects National Conference. In 2015 the conference program is examining The Changing Role of RISK in Architecture. The conference takes place in Melbourne from May 14 to 16, and it is anticipated that some 1500 delegates will attend.

Professor Donald Bates and Hamish Lyon (Director of NH Architecture and Studio Leader in the MSD Master of Architecture program), Andrew MacKenzie (URO Media and Architectural Competitions Manager CityLab) are the conference Creative Directors.

The Atrium of the MSD will play host to the conference's opening reception.

To accommodate this event, the Atrium and some of the adjacent L1 studios will be unavailable for student use from 4pm – 11pm on Thursday 14th May.

All efforts will be made to minimise disruption to students and staff.

Do you want to edit Inflection Journal in 2015/2016?

Founded, edited and run by MSD students, Inflection is supported by the MSD with Dr. AnnMarie Brennan serving as Academic Advisor.

Inflection is seeking the next round of editors to produce Volume 03, to be published in 2016.

Interested students should submit:
1. A 1000 word proposal outlining a proposed theme for the 2016 edition.
2. A ‘mock-up’ table of contents listing potential authors.
3. A short CV detailing any relevant experience and current progress through the relevant University course.

Proposals should be submitted by 12pm Monday the 11th of May 2015 to submissions@inflectionjournal.com

Students currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Environments, any MSD course, PhD candidates and other RHD students are eligible.

Inflection Journal invites you to submit a visual 'projection' for TRANSMIT | OUTWARD, an exciting exhibition to be mounted at the Melbourne School of Design in September 2015.

Selected entries will be published in the forthcoming issue of Inflection Journal.

Artwork can be of any medium, however must be proportioned to 4724 pixels wide and 5669 pixels high and must be related to the theme of 'projection'. Open to all.

First Year Tool Kit (Environments)

With first semester nearing the end, now is the time to start thinking about where the Bachelor of Environments might be able to to take you in your career journey. This seminar will show you how to develop a career plan, together with tips on where to research the best career information and leads.

New Semester 2 subject ENVS10012 Changing Melbourne open for enrolments

The city as a laboratory drives this new and exciting Environments subject that investigates scientific, design, engineering and social perspectives to ask how Melbourne can be modelled as the world’s most liveable city.

Through undertaking an in depth study of the places and event spaces of dynamic Melbourne you will research, experiment and prepare a future scenario for this city under transformation.

During the subject you will be introduced to a range of digital and analogue tools that will assist in the mapping and documentation of the city leading to future strategies and/or designs.

Students can enrol now via their Study Plan in my.unimelb using the subject code ENVS10012. 

Breadth internship subject

The subject MULT30020 Community Volunteering for Change is available to Environments students as breadth. It includes an 80 hour community development placement.

The aims of the subject are to enable you to undertake and report on a community-based project, gain significant insight into workplace issues, and further develop your employability skills.

Students will be expected to identify potential host organisations for work placement. Student may seek advice from the Melbourne Careers Centre who may provide support through seminars and workshops on when and how to approach host organisations

Opportunity to contribute to Utopia, Season 2

The production team currently working on the second season of Utopia, a series by Working Dog which was aired on ABC last year, is seeking contributions for the opening titles of season two.

The program is a satire about the difficult process of taking grand, uncosted, inadequately planned, fundamentally flawed schemes - and passing them off as "Nation Building".

They are looking to include some 3D animated architectural renders in the opening titles of the program.

The work of MSD students featured in the opening titles of the first session and are now looking for some new renders to enhance the new version.

ABCB Student Research Scholarship

Scholarship value: Up to $5000 one off payment
Duration: 1 year
Applications due: Applications will be considered at any time

The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) runs the Student Research Scholarship Program to encourage undergraduate and postgraduate research in the field of building regulatory reform in Australia.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be students currently undertaking

  • undergraduate or postgraduate studies in Building, Building Surveying, Fire Engineering, Architecture, Construction, Plumbing, Hydraulic Design or similar at an Australian educational institution; and
  • research that forms a component of a program or course at an educational institution (e.g. tertiary), such as a research project, thesis or dissertation.

The scholarship has no residency or citizenship requirements. Applicants may be studying full-time or part-time.

Register for the 2015 Bathroom Innovation Award

Entries close: 1 June 2015
Prize: The student winner will receive $5,000 and a two week internship with Roca at their headquarters in Barcelona, Spain.

The 2015 Reece Bathroom Innovation Award is now open for students and professionals.

Entrants are asked to submit an innovative tapware design for the contemporary bathroom environment. Each entrant must include the design for a basin tapware set or basin mixer as a minimum. The innovation presented can take many forms – from aesthetic, functional or sustainable to the type of material used or level of technological integration.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) Competition

BCA Academy (Singapore) invites students of built environments courses to participate in an international Building Information Modelling (BIM) Competition from August 17 to 20, 2015. Teams up to 8 students will deliver virtual design and construction solutions according to a project brief during the competition phase. Submissions made during the four-day competition are made online, in stages.

Public Lecture - Climate is Culture

David Buckland will narrate 14 years of Cape Farewell's ambition to place climate centre stage. Using the notion of expedition as a model to interrogate the future, Buckland will showcase some of the art produced by over 320 artists who have risen to the climate challenge and visioned, through their creative endeavour, why we must engage in building transformative, dynamic and sustainable societies.
