1. 2019 dominated by swine fever, as efforts to find a vaccine continue

As 2019 draws to a close, there is little doubt what the defining news event of the year has been. Swine fever in China has dominated global protein markets for the past 12 months and – without a vaccine to bring it under control – its impact looks set to continue for years to come.

2. Avian influenza confirmed in the UK

An incident of low pathogenic avian flu of the H5 strain has been confirmed at a commercial chicken farm in England, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

3. Norwegian fish product linked to Listeria infections

A brand of raw fermented trout has been recalled in Norway after being linked to several Listeria infections. Haadem Fisk withdrew ‘Hel rakfisk i spann – 4 kilograms’ with lot number 924 due to Listeria contamination. It was sold across the country.

4. Company recalls fresh fruit from hospitals, schools, etc., amid Salmonella Javiana outbreak

As promised, a New Jersey company is recalling pre-cut fresh fruit from hospitals, schools and other institutions because of a link to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened more than 30.

5. Salmonella recorded as most common cause of EU foodborne outbreaks

Nearly one in three foodborne outbreaks in the EU in 2018 were caused by Salmonella, according to an annual report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

6. Antimicrobial sales rise after two years of decline: FDA report

After two consecutive years of decline, domestic sales of antimicrobials for use in food-producing animals rose 9% in 2018 from the year before, FDA said in its annual report on stewardship of medically important antimicrobial drugs.
