National Day Of Action Against BullyingCHHS has an exciting day planned for Friday May 21 for NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE that will include the whole school community. Attendance MattersThe importance of arriving on time to school and class: 17 - 21 May • Year 7-10 Exams Bailey Whitton Wins 3 GoldsCongratulations to Bailey Whitton who won three Gold medals, one in the 50m and 100m Freestyle and one in the 100m Butterfly and a Bronze in the 200m Freestyle at the NSW CHSSA Swimming Championships. Bailey will be swimming in the All Schools on 28 May. Well done Bailey for such an awesome achievement. NSW CHSSA Swimming Championships2021 State Swim Meet was very well attended after the event was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid. Numbers were limited which meant each swimmer was allowed only one spectator. 2021 Futsal ChampionshipsFutsal was once again on the sporting calendar after last year’s covid cancellations. Camden Haven High School was well represented with nine teams competing in this fast-growing sport. It was great to see so many students once again being able to participate in active sports and in team situations. The school would like to thank the parents for promoting their children’s healthy participation in sport especially after the disruptions of last year. Regional Soccer StarsThis year many of our players performed extremely well at the soccer trials earning their selection into the prestigious Regional soccer teams to play in Lismore at the North Coast Trials. Top Photo: Lower North Coast Representatives (L to R): Bottom Photo: North Coast Representatives Senior Boys SoccerThe senior boys’ soccer team showed great resilience and determination last Thursday when they won a hard-fought victory against Hastings Secondary College Port Campus. The final score was 1-0 with both teams creating some goal scoring opportunities. 2021 Senior Girls SoccerThe Camden Haven Open Girls soccer team played an exhausting game against Melville High on Thursday. Both teams refused to give ground as the game was played from end to end with both teams creating moments of brilliance and real goal scoring opportunities. Melville started both halves strongly, pressing forward and looking for the elusive winner. However, the steadfast defensive backline of Phoebe Wilson, Zoe Bulmer, Lily Cunningham and the veteran, Erin Gunton, proved effective in denying Melville any easy shots. Photo (L to R): Zone Cross CountryLast Friday 7 May a bus load of energetic Cross Country runners travelled to Kempsey to compete in the LNC Zone Cross Country event. After a tough school course at Kendall the flat race course looked easy. The students’ behaviour and sportsmanship on the day made the staff who attended proud. Emma Biddick - Open Girls VolleyballOn Tuesday 18 May – 20 May, Emma Biddick, Year 12, will be representing the North Coast Team For Open Girls Volleyball in Armidale. Emma has been a valued member of our school and zone volleyball teams for numerous years and has always displayed excellent dedication to achieve her best in this sport. During the 3-day carnival the State team will be selected, so we wish Emma all the best for her final year representing CHHS in volleyball. Lower North Coast Dance Festival 2021The Camden Haven High School Dance Company will be performing at the Lower North Coast Dance Festival next week. We Will Rock YouAfter the unfortunate circumstances that led to CHHS musical of We Will Rock You to be cancelled last year, The Players Theatre in Port Macquarie started rehearsals earlier this year. Animal Cell ModelsYear 7 Goannas are studying the most fundamental component of all living things – the cell. Students learned to identify the main parts of the cell with interesting comments like “that cell looks like what I had for breakfast”, What’s that squiggly thing? Is that a worm in the cell? But towards the end of the week most students could identify and spell ‘nucleus’ and ‘vacuole’, terms sure to impress their friends! As a set homework task, students were asked to make and produce a scientific model of a labelled animal cell out of anything they could find. Models were on the whole extremely well crafted and informative; edible and non-edible. Edible models included cake cells, jelly cells and lolly cells. Non-edible models included Lego cells, recycled materials cells and plasticine cells. The cell models were displayed for two days in the library and students of edible cells were allowed to take them home and eat them, however, Eva Kaminski’s cell started to undergo cell division with jelly cytoplasm moving down the sides so that cell had to be marked and eaten before the display. Eva now has a close group of friends who are hoping her next project will be edible as well. Overall the Goannas enjoyed learning and making the animal cell and more adventures await them in the biological world.. CHHS Open Boys Tennis TeamOn Friday 30 April the open boy’s tennis team played in the second round of the schools state-wide Stan Jones Trophy Tennis knockout competition against Hastings Secondary College in Kendall. The team consisted of Jaxson McHugh, Ashton Holster, Elwood Dollery, Laith Micklesson and Deegan Wallace. Year 10 Visual ArtsThe Year 10 Visual Arts class have been very busy creating large scale portraits. The brief was to create a portrait of a person of interest to you, divided into 6-7 sections, each displaying a different technique / and or medium. NSW Rugby Union Country ChampionshipsCHHS Year 9 students Pryce Crane (left) and Connor Schmidt (right) who play for the Pirates Rugby Union Club have been selected to play for the Mid North coast Axemen Junior Rugby alongside nine others from the Pirates (in the under 14's, under 15's and under 18's). Pryce and Connor will be competing in the NSW Country Championships. Making KleponAs a reward for excellent behaviour and fantastic progress in Indonesian in Term 1, 7 Goannas made an Indonesian sweet treat called Klepon. These are coconut covered balls made from glutinous rice powder, pandan flavouring / colour, and filled with palm sugar (not palm oil!!). The boiled glutinous rice powder makes for a rubbery texture which is unusual in Australian cooking, and this is combined with a rush of molten palm sugar when bitten into. The verdict is out – some students loved it, others were not convinced. Mothers Day Raffle WinnersThe winners have been announced: 1. Karen Taylor, 2. Peter Dick, 3. Mary Tyquia, 4. Penny Smith, 5.
