Marinova Newsletter

March 2016

Welcome from Paul Garrott, CEO

I recently read an article of great interest on the growth of the nutritional supplement sector – a market that is now worth US$82bn globally. By 2020, the market in the Asia-Pacific region alone is expected to reach more than $37b, on the back of particularly high demand for high quality and certified organic functional ingredients.

Factors contributing to the increased uptake of nutritional supplements include greater market accessibility, rising consumer affluence and more robust science supporting the efficacy of nutraceutical products. Products that were once only available through health practitioners or through specialist health food stores are increasingly finding their way onto supermarket shelves and online.

Greater accessibility, however, does not guarantee quality. Despite the very best efforts of regulators around the world, the new distribution channels through which nutritional supplements are now being sold continue to create opportunities for the marketing of supplements of inferior quality and questionable nutritional value.

Reflecting on this market analysis, I realised just how well Marinova is positioned. Our company remains the only producer of certified organic fucoidan in the world and the only manufacturer of high-purity fucoidan compounds for nutritional, pharmaceutical and dermatological applications. Combined with our environmental credentials, ongoing commitments to R&D and product validation, I am proud to report that Marinova is extremely well placed to capitalize on the many opportunities that lie ahead.

I hope you enjoy reading the March edition of our newsletter, which provides an overview of the latest fucoidan research and activities happening here at Marinova.

Fucoidan aids brain function

The New Year has yielded several interesting new research studies investigating the relationship between fucoidan and brain performance. Previously, fucoidan has shown potential in the reduction of neuronal damage and function. This latest research has demonstrated that fucoidan from a variety of different seaweeds can improve the outcome of traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease in animal models. Common features observed... READ MORE >

Molecular weight: does size matter?

Molecular weight is often deliberated when considering the potential properties of fucoidan. Is it actually of great importance? The following article provides a detailed overview of molecular weight relating to fucoidan.
Molecular weight (MW) refers to a measure of molecular size. When applied to fucoidan, this measurement can be extremely large or small, depending on the source and method of extraction.Once extracted, fucoidan appears... READ MORE >

Fucoidan in the headlines

Fucoidan repairs blood vessels: the mechanism

Previous research has shown that fucoidan can assist in revascularisation of ischemic (oxygen deprived) muscle tissues. The cellular mechanism behind this useful therapeutic effect has now been determined in a recently published study, which focused on cell signalling and genome expression in human endothelial cells. Researchers found fucoidan could activate a signalling pathway that plays a crucial role in the growth of new blood vessels. FULL ARTICLE >

Fucoidan lessens diabetes markers

Inhibiting glucose metabolising enzymes is an established and effective therapeutic approach for type 2 diabetes. In a recent study, fucoidans were assessed for their effects towards glucose controlling enzymes. Fucoidan from Fucus sp. had a strong inhibitory effect on glucosidase. This fucoidan also decreased fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels, demonstrating the potential of fucoidan as a blood glucose control agent for type 2 diabetes. FULL ARTICLE >

Fucoidan dissolves blood clots via enzyme release

Thrombosis refers to a blood clot that can cause potentially serious health effects. Large clots can lodge in and block arteries entirely, causing death. Agents that dissolve clots without disturbing normal healthy blood clotting are of great interest, with previous research demonstrating the ability of fucoidan to do so. In this latest study, the clot-dissolving fucoidan was shown to help release a natural thrombolytic enzyme into the vascular system. FULL ARTICLE >

Installation of zero-waste technology

Environmental sustainability is core to Marinova’s operations, so it is with great pleasure to announce that the final stage of its zero waste project is now successfully underway.
Solid by-products of the proprietary Maritech® extraction process have been utilised in horticultural applications for a number of years, however liquid by-products have been unable to be fully harnessed, due to a lack of appropriate technologies. Following grant approval from... READ MORE >
