RESEARCH I Using systems science tools to co-design a systems thinking capability building strategy

At the 2025 PHAA Preventive Health Conference, Dr Mishel Shahid and Professor Steve Allender led a hands-on workshop on building systems thinking capability across Australia’s prevention sector. The session involved 50 professionals from various sectors and combined practical methods and collaboration to generate insights for building national capability in systems thinking. POLICY I Healthy Canberra: A cross-government plan enters its final phase

We spoke with the ACT Health Directorate as they reflected on the actions taken to embed prevention across government through their Preventive Health Plan 2020–2025. This plan brings together seven directorates and focuses on five key priorities: supporting children and families, enabling active living, increasing healthy eating, reducing risky behaviours and promoting healthy ageing. RESEARCH I Links between housing insecurity, domestic violence and poor health and wellbeing

There are more than 120,000 people experiencing homelessness in Australia, with three million at risk. Affordable and secure housing is key for preventing domestic and family violence and its associated harms. Research indicates that there is an urgent need in Australia to improve gender-responsive and trauma-informed housing. Read more

 
 

PROFILE I Prevention people  

Professor Gary Sacks is Co-Director of the Global Centre for Preventive Health and Nutrition (GLOBE) at Deakin University. He was recently appointed Director of the newly established VicHealth Commercial and Economic Determinants of Health Research Translation Centre, a collaboration between Deakin University and VicHealth launching in July 2025. Gary is on the Prevention Centre's Scientific Advisory Committee, having made a significant contribution to research that focuses on government and corporate policies for improving population diets, nutrition and healthier food environments. Read more

RESEARCH I Building evaluation capacity for Aboriginal programs

At the 2025 Preventive Health Conference, leaders from Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services collaborated with The Sax Institute’s Aboriginal Health team to share insights on strengthening evaluation capacity. The team presented findings from Indigenous-led Evaluations of Aboriginal Programs, a four-year project completed in May 2025. Read more
