How to Get Started Tool and Equipment Tracking with RFID

So you have heard how RF technology is the future of tool and equipment management.  Now what do you do?  CSL and RFID4U have some tips to hep you get started and get the best investment.

  1. Create a spreadsheet of all the tools and equipment to be tracked. If you have over 50,000 assets or several high dollar assets then RF tool and equipment management is for you.
  2. Determine what tool tracking method works best within your existing operational procedures: check in/check out, personnel monitoring, or wide area yard monitoring. Let the technology adapt to your business processes.
  3. Hire an experienced system integrator that will provide a complete solution and support. RFID4U will take ownership of your RFID project to ensure its success.
  4. Invest in equipment that meets several different scenarios such as CSL’s CS101 hand held reader that can read barcodes, RFID, RTLS, and report GPS locations.
  5. Be sure to test and verify a pilot system. Remember that the upfront time investment will payoff later in a reduction of lost tools, increased tool utilization, and increased workforce productivity.
  6. We strongly recommend getting all of your personnel trained within the first month of adopting the system. If your staff is not properly trained, it’s likely that use of the system will decrease over time.
