Autumn 2018 Edition A note from our CEO Greetings everyone and I trust you are enjoying the slightly cooler weather after the heat of summer. I’m one of those people that enjoys the cooler months so am certainly looking forward to rugging up rather than trying to cool down. It was good to hear that there wasn’t an increase in hospital presentations in the ACT through summer with heat-related issues or sunburn. Hopefully that means people are looking after themselves more and remembering to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide more regularly. It was great to see so many people take advantage of our free (thanks to those who gave us a donation) sunscreen available at the concert on Canberra Day in March at Commonwealth Park. It’s been a busy season for us, culminating with Relay For Life on the 24th and 25th March. We had over 1300 participants, 111 teams registered and have so far raised just over $250,000. Not quite our target of $300,000, though still an incredible amount of generosity from the local community. Once again, I was at the event and spent most of my time talking with team members and I even did a few laps to ensure I reached as many people as possible. I was amazed by those who were determined to complete the whole event solo, and the support from their other team members was critical to their success. Carrying a 30kg pack at the same time made it a mammoth effort for Hayden van der Hoek from ADFA, Foxtrot SQN 2. CANBERRA Thank you to all who participated in Canberra Relay For Life 2018. The event was a huge success with over 1,500 participants walking and/or running to raise over $251,000 towards Cancer Council ACT's important work. Hayden van der Hoek from Team ADFA F SQ 2 led and inspired us all by dedicating his walk to his Grandfather, who he lost to cancer three years ago. Haydon walked for 24 hours (with only the obligatory stops and hourly health checks) in full army combat uniform, carrying a full pack and a simulated 7kg rifle weighing a total of 30kgs!. A big shout out to our other Relay prize winners: Highest Fundraising Team: Bold Bandannas (raising a whopping $33,000!)

Living Well After Cancer Many people see the world differently after finishing cancer treatment and find it difficult to get things ‘back to normal’. They may be dealing with a range of practical challenges such as physical changes and side effects from the treatment to managing the emotional and social impacts. Cancer Council ACT aims to help people who have finished their cancer treatment through our free Living Well after Cancer program. The free 2.5 hour program is facilitated by trained cancer survivors and includes practical information and open discussion for people who are cancer survivors, carers, family, friends and work colleagues. In March, eighteen cancer survivors, their families and friends met at the Vikings Town Centre club in Tuggeranong for another Living Well after Cancer Program. The participants learnt about the possible changes, challenges and opportunities they may face after completing cancer treatment. As well as having the opportunity to connect with others on a similar journey, and share tips, ideas and activities to help live their life well. Once again all the feedback from the day was very positive. Cancer Council ACT is very grateful to Vikings Town Centre for providing the venue free of charge on the day. Cancer Council will be hosting another Living Well after Cancer Program later in the year, if you are interested in registering your interest for the next program please contact Sue West on 6257 9999 or sue.west@actcancer.org Sun Camera Classroom Experience In Term 2, Cancer Council ACT in collaboration with The University of the Sunshine Coast and Cancer Council QLD is excited to once again offer ACT secondary school students (year 9-12 only) and all teachers a special opportunity to undertake a UV Digital Imaging Photograph to assess solar induced skin damage to reinforce the importance of sensible sun protection measures. Understanding Cancer Cancer Council’s information booklets and fact sheets are written for people with cancer, as well as their family and friends. Designed to complement information from health care teams, they cover the specific cancer types and treatments, as well as emotional and practical issues. They also provide practical information to help people understand what they are going through, including answers to common questions and where to go for support. All the publications are evidence based, and reviewed regularly by a panel of cancer experts so readers can be confident they are receiving the most up to date information. Some booklets are also available as ebooks. The full range of publications is available online here or call our information and support line 13 11 20 to order a free copy. |
