Asafo Flags at The Gallery of Everything, Londonuntil September 15, 2019 In the 17th century, on the coast of what is now modern-day Ghana, the Fante people developed a new tradition, commencing a visual practice today considered as one of the most vivid and celebratory of 20th century Africa. These are Asafo flags: asa meaning war, fo meaning people. They are symbols and allegories, conjured from folk tales and proverbs across the region. The works on display feature vintage flags from a number of key collections, including that of author and enthusiast, Peter Adler. The works encompass a variety of media including drawing, painting and sculpture and join artworks Bailey gifted in 2016, increasing his total contribution to 60 objects. All but two of the 28 artists are new additions to PAMM’s collection. A number of notable artists from the southern United States such as Sam Doyle, Purvis Young, Thornton Dial, Herbert Singleton, Clementine Hunter, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Minnie Evans, Roy Ferdinand, Lonnie Holley, and Leroy Almon are represented. Raw Vision Short Film CompetitionBelow is Dave Mutnjakovic's entry into the Raw Vision 2019 short film competition. "Wing Ding Zing Zong Rush" was shot on a mobile phone using a stop motion app. The film is intended to show the layers of movement and magic discovered when one is patient and transcends instant gratification. All of the artist's works are messages of hope ("hope drawings"). |
