Mediumistic Art:The Automatic Drawings of Alma Rumball@MediumisticArt have published an interview about Canada's foremost outsider and self-taught artist Alma Rumball (1902–1980) and her amazing automatic drawings. The interview is with Wendy Oke who knew Alma and is married to Alma's nephew. She has spent the last fifty years looking after Alma's legacy and has shared some fascinating insights in her art.
Fairy Lake Fairy: Alma lived on the shores of Fairy Lake in Huntsville the entire time she drew her inspired drawings. Courtesy of Wendy & Colin Oke "In the early 1950’s, when Alma was around 50 and working at the ceramics factory, she had a vision of Christ with a panther at his side. He did not look like the man Jesus, but identified Himself as the Christ, and He said, “You must draw and you must write.” Following that vision, she became clairvoyant and ‘The
Hand’ began to do the drawing, separate from Alma’s consciousness. "
Wendy Prophesised: Wendy said “I knew I had been expected, as a series of the drawings were clear depictions of me, as I looked when I was young.” Courtesy of Wendy & Colin Oke"Alma’s process was Psychic Automatism which is the pure state sought by visionaries who simply stay out of the way, and ‘allow’ inspiration to flow freely, uninhibited by the left brain or dogma."

NIAD Exhibitions:Jean McElvane studied art and music at Contra Costa Community College. She also worked as an artist’s assistant.
Hummingbird and Flower, Jean McElvane (2017). Mixed media, glazed ceramics and found and recycled materials 9 x 9 x 1.5 in. “My art is my children. I make what I like and share it with the world. With projects I make in detail, I look at what's in front of me. Anything I've made in the past has been improved over the years through studies."
Tiny Hummingbird Mobile, Jean McElvane (2018). Recycled and found materials, paint and mixed media 19 x 4 x 4 in. Her paintings and drawings tend toward realism, but the majority of her work is in the craft field, creating meticulously built fiber projects or using recycled and found materials to build amazing objects that capture the essence of insects and other creatures. Jean’s work has been seen recently in exhibitions at ACCI Gallery in Berkeley, Rock, Paper Scissors Collective in Oakland, and at the Richmond Art Center. Learn
