WIN A DOUBLE PASS TO MAKING MODERNISM AT QAG!

Enjoy this rare opportunity to see the iconic art of Georgia O’Keeffe alongside modernist masterpieces by pioneering Australian artists, Margaret Preston and Grace Cossington Smith during the Queensland Art Gallery's ‘Making Modernism’ exhibition, until 11 June.

Born in the late nineteenth century, the three painters came of age during the 1910s and 1920s, a time of great social and cultural transition. While they were not connected by personal familiarity or direct correspondence, they were kindred spirits, rejecting the artistic conventions of the past and forging new ways of picturing the changing world.  ‘Making Modernism’ draws together around 30 works by each artist over the breadth of their groundbreaking careers.

Thanks to the Gallery we have 5 double passes to give away to this beautiful exhibition!
Simply email admin@businesssouthbank.com.au by 12pm, Friday 17 March to be in the draw.

The Connection

Queensland Tourism Industry Council

Name and position?
Daniel Gschwind – Chief Executive, Queensland Tourism Industry Council

Daniel has a Bachelor of Economic, Honours (First Class) from The University of Queensland. Daniel is an Adjunct Professor at the University Of Queensland School Of Tourism, is a Board Member for Jobs Queensland and the Chairman of the Australian Tourism Awards. He is also the Honorary Consul for the Consulate of Switzerland – Queensland.

Tell us about your business/organisation?
Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) is the peak industry body for tourism in Queensland, acting as “The Voice of Tourism”. We’re a not-for-profit, private sector, membership-based organisation representing the interests of Queensland’s tourism and hospitality industry. We work for our business members and in partnership with government agencies and industry bodies at a local, state and national level, to strengthen the voice of tourism in all relevant policy forums.

What is your role at your organisation?
As Chief Executive I represent the interests of Queensland’s tourism businesses with the intention to positively shape the state’s tourism business environment for an industry that directly contributes $23 billion to the State’s economy and employs more than 220,000 people. I also represent QTIC on various committees and advisory boards including the Tourism Research Advisory Board, University of Queensland Industry Advisory Board, the Griffith Institute for Tourism Advisory Board, the Bond University Regional Advisory Board, the GBRMPA Tourism Reef Advisory Committee (TRAC) and the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre (RRRC).

I’m also a member of Jobs Queensland and am the deputy chair of the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC) and I chair the Australian Tourism Awards.

What are your key skills and responsibilities?
Core to my role is the active engagement with people and organisations, connecting with all parts of the tourism industry to advance a common aspiration for Queensland and its tourism communities.

How many people work at your business?
We have a dedicated and committed team of 11 staff and we mentor a number of interns throughout the year who form a valuable part of our team.

What is your favourite place in the precinct?
Apart from our office (the view from our Level 5 balcony of the city skyline is phenomenal), I really enjoy the variety of people you encounter on the streets of South Bank – it’s such a vibrant and exciting place to be. From togs to tuxedos, we have it all here in South Bank in a vibrant, daily mix.

What do you want BSB members to know about you or your business?
Our doors are always open, we’re happy to explore new ideas and engage in creative thinking.

What is something people wouldn’t know about your business?
People may not be aware about how diverse the QTIC membership base is and also how broad our work scope is from driving indigenous employment and workforce development to coordinating the annual Queensland Tourism Awards.

What has recently happened at your organisation?
It’s been a big 6 months for QTIC from relocating our office to South Bank to celebrating Queensland’s strong performance at the recent Australian Tourism Awards which were held in Darwin.

What have you learnt lately?
Change is a challenging issue to face - I’ve learnt that changes that are going to affect a large group of people will take a long time to bring about and it is challenging to manage.

What do you hope to achieve in your industry?
I hope that Queensland can deliver the full benefit from tourism for its economy, its environment and its community.

What inspires you?
The passion and determination of the many thousands of people in the Queensland tourism industry who are willing to give it a go!

What are your words of wisdom?
You learn more from listening then from talking.
