PSY 1059: TOPICS IN ADV LAB METHODS – Mixed Methods in Developmental Psychology
It is offered next spring the following dates/times:
T/Th 9:30am – 10:45am
T/TH 1:00pm – 2:15pm
In this course, students will be introduced to mixed methods research in psychology. Mixed methods research consists of combining statistical trends (quantitative data) with participant’s stories and personal experiences (qualitative data) to provide a better understanding of a research problem than either type of data alone. A primary aspect of this course will be to teach students a) how to determine if mixed methods are necessary given their problem statement and research questions, b) the advantages and challenges of using mixed methods, and c) how to design a mixed methods study. Undergraduate students will develop an independent research proposal, collect, and analyze data to test a mixed methods research question, and write an APA mixed methods paper. Graduate students will conceptualize and design a mixed methods research study and write a research study grant proposal.
This course fulfills the Psychology Advanced Methods Lab requirement for majors.

Undergraduate Under-represented Minority (URM) Psychology Student Mentorship
Through the Society of Pediatric Psychology, Division 54 of the American Psychological Association, our group was funded to provide undergraduate under-represented minority (URM) psychology students an opportunity to apply for the Promoting Equity in Pediatric Psychology (PEPP) mentorship program for the 2024 calendar year.
The purpose of PEPP is to provide students with the opportunity to learn more about the field of pediatric psychology, while providing individualized mentorship opportunities to assist students with submitting research abstracts to national conferences, engaging in data analysis and lab meetings, and co-authoring peer-reviewed publications within the field of pediatric psychology. In order to achieve these goals, students will apply to the mentoring program and be paired with mentors who have similar research interests. Students will meet virtually with their mentors on a regular basis. Additionally, students will meet virtually once per month with guest psychologists, members of the anti-racism in research subgroup, and/or members of the PEPP Undergraduate Mentorship committee to discuss various topics (e.g., CV building, funding graduate school, etc.). Ideal candidates for
this program will be URM students in their sophomore or junior year of university who plan to pursue graduate education or a post-baccalaureate program.
For the upcoming 2024 calendar year, we will be accepting two students. The deadline to apply is January 8, 2024.
Interested students should apply here.
