Office of Undergraduate Research, Spring Research Opportunity

I am writing from the Office of Undergraduate Research to share that we will be offering ~22 Spring Sections of our one-credit course, ARTSC 0101: First Approaches to Research. This course is appropriate for any DSAS or CGS undergraduate student seeking to navigate the research landscape across the disciplines at the University. Students enrolled in FA-R will learn about

  • the  diverse forms research takes at a university like the University of Pittsburgh, particularly the difference between faculty-driven research and student-driven research;
  • how to best utilize the resources of the University Library System (ULS) to help refine a potential research interest;
  • paths to research opportunities available through coursework;
  • how to communicate effectively through in-person  and email  interactions  with potential research mentors;
  • how to discern between a meaningful research opportunity and an exploitative one;
  • how to create documents like a resume, cover letter, and statement of interest that will help secure a research position

Students of all years and backgrounds may find FA-R to be a helpful addition to their Spring 2026 schedules. Although many of the students who enroll might be early in their academic careers, it is also an appropriate course for later-career undergraduates who have prioritized other experiential learning opportunities in their first years at Pitt and are now interested in learning about research. It is also sometimes taken by students who have already participated in some form of research and are now looking for a supportive environment from which to launch a search for new research opportunities.

Please note that this First Approaches to Research (FA-R) course is entirely unrelated to the First Experiences in Research (FE-R) matching program—one is not a prerequisite for the other. The application window for Spring 2026 First Experiences in Research closed in September; interested students may apply for the Spring 2027 matching cycle in fall of 2026. Should you or your students have specific questions about any of the opportunities offered through the Office of Undergraduate Research, please direct them to OUR@pitt.edu
