STFM Advocates for Protected Teaching Time 

In response to the ACGME Family Medicine Program Requirements that went into effect in July 2019, STFM sent a letter to the ACGME asking that they give review committees the autonomy to define the amount of time their faculty needs to meet administrative responsibilities and accreditation requirements, while devoting sufficient time and attention to preparing residents for future independent practice. The STFM Board of Directors also approved funding for a task force to quantify the amount of time needed to meet ACGME requirements.

Call for Applications: STFM Program Assessment Chair 

The STFM Board of Directors is accepting applications for the position of STFM program assessment chair. The program assessment chair works closely with the executive director/CEO and is responsible for working with STFM program champions and staff to regularly evaluate programs.

In a fierce, hard-won battle, KP Napa-Solano Family Medicine Residency (@kpnapasolanofmr) won the STFM Instagram competition with more than 11,000 points.The competition allowed participants to showcase the benefits of their residency program through social media. In total, participating teams created almost 600 posts.

Training Medical Students to Communicate Effectively With Interprofessionals Using a Simulated Electronic Health Record

Medical professionals communicate frequently with providers across professional lines through electronic health records (EHRs), but limited curricula exists to train medical students in this critical skill.

An educational intervention introduced a standardized, simulated experience in a family medicine clerkship with the goal of teaching students about the principles of interprofessional communication in a simulated EHR environment.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Tia Tucker, MD, MPH tried to envision how to apply her MPH toward rebuilding a city suffering from pre-existing population health care concerns and significant resource shortages. Introducing FPM's New Medical Editor

Former STFM Board and Committee Member Sarina Schrager, MD, MS, has been appointed FPM's new medical editor. Dr Schrager practices full-scope family medicine with low-risk obstetrics and teaches at the University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in Madison, where she is a professor.

Dr Schrager plans to publish articles about clinical decision-making, communication, and other aspects of patient care that affect professional satisfaction and personal well-being.

Students, Residents Elect New Leaders for the Coming Year

At the 2019 AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students, delegates to the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents and the National Congress of Student Members chose 2020 leaders, including STFM Board of Directors resident member Yeri Park, MD, Lawrence Family Medicine Residency at Greater Lawrence Family Health Center in Lawrence, Mass., and student member Sara Robinson, of the Central Michigan University College of Medicine in Saginaw.
