NCGRT and Flinders University train Vietnamese Future Leaders in Groundwater Science and Management
In a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) supported ‘Australian Award Fellowship’ program, fifteen young and mid-career Vietnamese delegates participated in a twenty-day ‘Groundwater Science and Management’ training program, part of which was conducted at Flinders University. Through the NCGRT’s Australia-wide network of groundwater experts and alumni, the Vietnamese fellows were provided the opportunity to network with and be mentored on their specific groundwater case studies. The program was rich in teaching, field visits, cultural engagements, gender session and mentoring and included: - The NCGRT’s 4-day intensive groundwater training course in Canberra: “The Australian Groundwater School”.
- One-on-one sessions with groundwater experts in Canberra and Adelaide to work through the delegates groundwater issues in Vietnam.
- Presentations from representatives at Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, CSIRO, Australian Water Partnerships and Australian National University in Canberra.
- Field trip by bus from Canberra to Adelaide visiting regional hydrogeological significant locations. Guided by SA-DEWNR expert hydrogeologist
Mr. Steve Barnett, the trip focussed on groundwater management issues in the Murray-Darling Basin.
- A field trip led by Flinders University’s Professor Howard Fallowfield to the Kingston on Murray treatment high rate algal pond, Banrock Station Wetlands Centre to learn about the ecosystems.
We would like to extend a thank you to everyone who contributed the fellow's program during their Australian visit. Photo credit: Delegates with Professor Okke Batelaan and Elaine Ward, Director - Australia Awards & Alumni Branch - DFAT
2018 Distinguished Lecturer is Dr Jennifer Stauber
We are thrilled to announce that the 2018 NCGRT IAH Distinguished Lecturer is Dr. Jennifer Stauber, Chief Research Scientist - CSIRO Land and Water Dr Stauber will present on the topic of Groundwater Quality - an Ecotoxicologist’s Perspective. Stay tuned in early 2018 for the final details including finalised lecture title, abstract and tour dates.
Abstract: Plain Language Summary
We suggest that groundwater depletion adds significant and measurable CO2 to the atmosphere and should be considered as a source in future CO2 budgets as groundwater depletion at the same or greater rate is likely to continue
Hot off the press: New study estimates groundwater could be adding large amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphereA new study estimates U.S. groundwater depletion could be responsible for releasing 1.7 million metric tons (3.8 billion pounds) of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere every year.
2017's Distinguished Lecturer Glen WalkerOn behalf of the IAH and NCGRT, we would like to sincerely thank Dr. Glen Walker for generously giving his time to deliver the 2017 Distinguished Lecture. Glen's lecture provided valuable insights into the current issues in climate change in Australia. We would also like to thank each panel member who also provided state / area context to Glen's talk. Attendance was high at each location and provided a great opportunity for networking! Photo credit: Glen watching the sunset over the Arafura Sea, Northern Territory
