American Folk Art Museum's New Gallery in QueensNamed after one of its recent exhibitions, AFAM's new "Self-Taught Genius Gallery" has just opened in Long Island City, in the borough of Queens, within walking distance of a subway station. The free-admission space will feature changing displays of works from AFAM's permanent collection. Its inaugural show, including classic art and objects from its vast holdings, puts the new venue firmly on the map of a district that boasts an increasing number of visual-art outposts. American Folk Art Museum, Self-Taught Genius Gallery Ionel Talpazan at Christopher Kane, LondonPhoto courtesy Christopher Kane Last week, Christopher Kane and Raw Vision magazine hosted a cocktail party to celebrate the work of Romanian outsider artist Ionel Talpazan at the brand’s flagship store on Mount Street. Talpazan's UFO paintings, sketches and sculptures are displayed alongside Kane's Autumn/Winter collection in an elegant and unique presentation. Embracing mechanical effects, hologram prints and prints of Talpazan's UFOs, Kane's otherworldly collection juxtaposed with Talpazan's art feels otherworldly. Self-taught artist Ionel Talpazan claimed to have seen a UFO as a child and became obsessed with the concept of alternate life forms, going on to sell his works on the streets of Manhattan. His works exude the raw passion much admired by Kane. See the installation at the store until October 25, 2017.
