1. As winter settles in, global avian infections rise; with Northern Ireland being the latest to detect bird flu in commercial flock

New outbreaks of several strains of avian influenza continue to rise, bringing cause for boosting protective measures across nations. Around 30,000 birds in Northern Ireland were the latest to be culled following detection of bird flu on a poultry farm.

2. U.S. livestock antibiotic sales rise for second year in a row

In 2019, livestock producers ordered more medically important antibiotics for the second year running, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

3. Food safety is a top concern influencing food choices in Europe

A recent Eurobarometer survey finds food safety as one of the main factors influencing Europeans’ food purchases along with taste and price, according to a survey of more than 27,000 people in 27 EU member states.

8. Continued rise in food recalls in Switzerland

There have been 80 food recalls from 2017 to 2019; information published by Swiss authorities shows the country a steady growth in food recall alerts and public warnings during the past five years.

9. Dutch researchers show impact of foodborne disease

Dutch study has estimated around 40 percent of the foodborne burden was link with meat in 2019. Poultry, pork, beef and lamb were a cause of a third of all food related fatalities.
