HPV Vaccine Now Approved For Adults
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Gardasil 9, an HPV vaccine, for adults between the ages of 27 and 45.
Previously, the vaccine was approved only for children and young adults aged 9 to 26. However, new research has shown that the vaccine is safe and effective for the older age group.
HPV (human papillomavirus) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. While most cases of HPV clear on their own, some HPV types can lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, and anus.
Genital warts and some head and neck cancers are also caused by HPV.
The vaccine does not cover all HPV types, however.
