Million pound investment to make cycling more accessible for allAn electric bike pilot scheme that has received more than £1 million of funding from the Welsh Government is already helping local residents to swap their car for a bike in communities across Wales. The electric bike loan scheme, run by Sustrans, offers a range of battery assisted electric bikes for free on long-term loan for local residents that do not cycle regularly or find the cost of electric bikes a barrier to using them. The scheme which is being rolled out initially in five locations across Wales, Rhyl, Swansea, Newtown (with links to Aberystwyth) and Barry, will help the Welsh Government gather data to inform recommendations for the long term use of electric bikes and active travel. Chartered Society of Physiotherapy launches new First Contact Physiotherapy career guideThe Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) has developed a First Contact Physiotherapy (FCP) career guide which explains different development routes to FCP or musculoskeletal (MSK) advanced practice roles. FCP services position highly skilled MSK practitioners as the first point of contact in primary care, enabling them to provide early expert intervention for patients and allowing GPs to focus on the patients who need their specific skills. The CSP's new FCP career guide provides essential information and scenarios about these roles - whether you’re a student, a qualified physiotherapist or an advanced MSK physio – as well as guidance that is applicable to wherever you are based in the UK. 5k Your Way - A support group with a difference5k Your Way is a community-based initiative to encourage those living with and beyond cancer, families, friends and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer or volunteer at a local 5k Your Way parkrun event on the last Saturday of every month. The 5K Your Way, Move Against Cancer initiative is provided by MOVE Charity. The charity has groups across the UK and Ireland and everyone is welcome to join. The next group meet up is on Saturday 25th September. Each of the 5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer parkruns will have an ambassador there on the last Saturday of every month to meet and great. The ambassadors are your 'go to' for each event and will run/walk with some of you if they can. After the walk/run, the ambassadors will gather participants together for socialising over a drink and cake. As well as exercise support there is also a range of resources available such as training sessions, workshops, podcasts and a YouTube channel. Plan to make eating out healthierLabelling on menus to show how many calories are in food is a key part of a new plan to make it easier for people to make healthier choices when eating out in Scotland. Ahead of a public consultation, the Out of Home Action Plan outlines steps to work closely with the food industry to help tackle obesity by providing healthier food and drink choices for people. It includes proposals for a code of practice for healthier children’s menus and calorie labelling on menus in cafes, restaurants and takeaways. Eating out is common place with almost everyone in Scotland (98%) consuming food outside the home. Nutrition information is often not available for food and drink bought from cafés, restaurants, takeaways and other outlets. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how important it is to have a nutritious diet and maintain a healthy weight. The Plan commits to support the delivery of Scottish Government’s Good Food Nation ambition and vision and wider food policies, including by incorporating good practice on matters such as food waste, local sourcing and climate change.
