Suburbs Lead in Diversity Growth

Over the past 13 years, populations of color in Hennepin and Ramsey counties grew about 40 to 50 percent. In each of the Twin Cities area’s five purely suburban counties, that number was more than 100 percent.

Among the suburban communities with the most significant growth were Burnsville, Shakopee, Woodbury and Brooklyn Park, which all gained more than 8,000 residents of color between 2000 and 2013. Read more >>

Metro Areas With The Most New (Commercial and Residential) Construction In 2014

Forbes compiled a list of Building Boom Towns, using building data for the nation’s Metropolitan Statistical Areas to find the 20 places where the most money has been spent on new construction from the start of 2014 through September.

Minneapolis ranked as #12. With the largest project being $400 million in upgrades at Flint Hills Resources' Pine Bend Refinery.

"Accessory" Dwellings Head to the Mpls. Council

A new breed of housing that would allow homeowners to build a separated residence on their property sailed through a key city panel. The so-called "accessory dwelling units" would be a new affordable living option for renters or aging family members that would provide a steady source of income for people struggling to pay for and maintain a larger home. Builders and Remodelers Add 8,000 Jobs

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, October saw steady job growth, but weak wage gains. An increase in both areas would help support housing demands for 2015. Last month home builders and remodelers added 8,000 jobs to the residential construction sector on a seasonal adjusted basis according to NAHB analysis of BLS data. Read more >>


The home improvement business is booming

Shares of Home Depot (HD)and Lowe's (LOW) are trading near all-time highs as Wall Street bets that an improving economy will lead to a boom in home repairs and remodeling. Both stocks have soared almost 20% this year. Read more >>

The generalization that millennials don’t really want to own homes is largely untrue. The answer is that millennials are getting married later in life, and not having two income streams makes it much harder to scratch together a down payment. Read more >>
