Chand Baori in the Indian state of Rajasthan is a 13-storey, 20 metre deep stepwell. The structure was built in the tenth century to conserve water in an arid environment. The use of stepwells declined with the increase in use of water pumps and pipes under British rule. A number of wells remain today in various states of preservation.
