MSA (Middle States Association) Accreditation Team Visit February 18-21The team will be looking at 12 standards and 3 objectives that need to be revisited every 7 years for a school to be accredited. When the MSA team arrives, they will expect that teachers, students, and parents know the 3 main objectives for the school community. Mission - Governance and Leadership - School Improvement - Finance Facilities - School Organization and Staff - Health and Safety - Educational Programs Assessment and Evidence of Student Learning - Student Services Student Life and Student Activities - Information Resources MSA has given a final approval for our objectives but not before proposing some slight changes to our science and mathematics objectives. Family Fun in Intensive EnglishThis week the IE class is investigating how children live in different parts of the world. This is an interesting and engaging topic for our students to develop their English language abilities! 9-Year-Olds learning about safetyThe nine year old class had the opportunity to join the five and 11 year old classes on a field trip to the YKK training facility. They learned about C.P.R., first aid, the use of various fire extinguishers, and egress from a smoke filled room. They also got to sit inside a life boat! Music Possibilities! -Mr. StevensonAt tonight's Winter Concert, you may notice no “Jingle Bells” or similar songs. This is because the students wanted something different…and they got it! I want our students to have a voice in what happens in music class. This keeps them enthusiastic and interested. For our next concert in the spring, prepare to be amazed by our singer/songwriters! Students have already begun writing songs for voice, ukelele and/or for the recorder. In our classes, from age 8 on up, nearly half of them have already reached the 9th level of our current recorder program. Now it’s time to synthesize what they’ve learned by writing original works! You won’t hear “Hot Cross Buns” being played by these talented learners. Starting in January, they will be introduced to a class-sized set of keyboards with many electronic possibilities. These will also allow them to create their own material while playing other composers’ work in the process. Making music on a variety of instruments will help our students soar! Research has shown time and again that musicians have greater abilities in their schoolwork and that is what we all want. However, shhhh! Don’t tell your children! Let them think that they’re “just having fun!” Literacy Week February 11 – 15Book Exchange on Friday, February 15thTeachers and the PSG are currently planning a week full of wonderful literacy activities! We need your help! Two weeks before the book exchange, we will be collecting age appropriate children's books in any language! When your child brings in books, they will receive tokens for the books they bring. Then, at the book fair, they will get to use those tokens in exchange for other books. As many of you may be traveling back home, this would be a great time to bring a few books back with you. Find used children's books at a garage sale. Buy your child a new book to read on the trip home. They could use this book to trade for another book during the exchange. Happy holidays and happy book hunting!
