Imagining Social Justice
Summer Two, Tues+Thurs 12:00pm-3:15pm, Online Synchronous

What can ghosts tell us about ourselves, about history, and about social justice? In this course, we will explore a variety of speculative texts, with a particular emphasis on ghost stories, in order to address and complicate this question. Speculative fiction—science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other texts with fantastical or "weird" elements—allow us to imagine other places and other worlds. These texts bring our own lived worlds into sharp relief, allowing us to identify social issues, injustice, and violence in our communities. These texts also might allow us to imagine other ways of living. We will use critical tools like argument and investigative writing to further explore those other ways of living.

As a writing-intensive section of Imagining Social Justice, we will be practicing significant levels of writing and revision. Additionally, we will be reading and discussing important primary and secondary texts. This course fulfills the Literature 1 Gen Ed requirement.

This study involves a very brief screening survey to determine whether you are eligible, and then a 1-hour long session where you will come into the lab and answer questions about your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and complete a writing task.

Identity and Intergroup Relations Lab

In the Identity & Intergroup Relations Lab, we research interactions between members of different social groups (e.g., gay people and straight people, Black people and White people, etc.), what influences the quality of these interactions, and what we can do to improve them. We also research the outcomes that follow from these interactions, particularly for members of minoritized groups (e.g., disparities in health and wellbeing, identity threat, etc.). Current projects in the lab examine when and why people choose to reveal or conceal their stigmatized identities, and what the downstream effects of prejudice reduction interventions are for minoritized-group members.

The Structured Information for Precision Neuroengineering (SIPLab) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is hiring a research technician with a background in human neuroscience to work with Drs. Christopher Rozell and Sankar Alagapan. The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or related areas and experience in conducting human subject studies with neural data acquisition (e.g., EEG, MEG, intracranial EEG, fMRI). Experience in working with patient populations will be considered a plus.

The research technician will contribute to ongoing efforts in studying brain-body relationships underlying effortful behavior in healthy individuals, individuals with depression, and individuals undergoing intracranial monitoring for epilepsy surgery planning. The responsibilities will include

• Recruitment of participants for studies, including coordinating with collaborators
• Conducting screenings for recruitment of study participants, performing interviews and questionnaires
• Maintaining study documentation, including IRB protocols, consent forms, and questionnaires
• Coordinating study visits with other study investigators
• Assisting data collection

The lab is committed to the professional development of the members, making this opportunity a valuable preparation for people who are interested in applying for grad/medical school.  Excellent (written and oral) communication skills in English are required. The start date is flexible but ideally would be as soon as possible. The position is initially for 12 months with the possibility of renewal. This position is ideal for those interested in pursuing graduate training in clinical psychology, developmental psychology, or public health. A very successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to the writing of empirical papers. Dr. Richmond-Rakerd's and Dr. Rodriguez-Seijas's labs both involve a focus on health disparities and externalizing outcomes. Dr. Richmond-Rakerd's lab has ongoing projects concerning links between mental and physical health, and Dr. Rodriguez-Seijas's lab has ongoing projects focused on understanding various models of psychopathology (e.g., the HiTOP model, the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders [AMPD]) and how they interface with psychosocial stressors experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals. Thus, there are a variety of areas of research focus for applicants to consider.

VA Palo Alto Health Care System

Dr. Haijing Hallenbeck is hiring a full-time research coordinator to assist with a VA-funded study based at the Menlo Park VA campus, ideally starting in October 2026. The study involves building and testing a mobile health intervention to improve symptoms and functioning in Veterans with PTSD and depression. Responsibilities include: recruiting, screening, and scheduling participants; conducting in-person study visits; and managing data and assisting with data analysis and manuscript preparation. On-site work is required. Experience conducting clinical interviews (e.g., SCID-5) is a plus but not required. High attention to detail and strong interpersonal and organizational skills are desired. The research assistant will also support other studies involving mobile health assessments or interventions in a Veteran population. Additionally, they will receive research mentoring and other opportunities for professional development (e.g., presenting at conferences). This position is an ideal fit for aspiring applicants to graduate or medical school looking to gain research experience at the intersection of mental health and technology.

Must be a U.S. Citizen and authorized to work in the U.S.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Social Sciences, Public Health, or related field
At least one year of previous research experience

Salary Range: $63,081-$77,161, depending on degree and experience
