ONE IN FIVE
A podcast about disability research

Earlier this month we released One in Five: a new podcast that explores some of the most complex issues facing people with disability today. The podcast gives voice to people with disability and asks about their experiences with employment, housing, the law, supporting families and early intervention. A range of experts including people with disability, researchers and people working in the sector talk about what we can do to improve the lives of people with disability.

We've just released two new episodes: No One Size Fits All, and a Whole New Language. To be the first to hear when new episodes are available, subscribe here.

This is our last email for the year so we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy holiday season and say a big thank you for your support throughout the year. We are looking forward to 2020!

In No One Size Fits All, we hear how people with disability interact with the law and how the justice system can improve their responses to people with disability. We hear about unfitness to stand trial laws, how people with intellectual disability or severe mental health conditions have not been expected to have legal capacity to make their own decisions until quite recently and, we consider consumer law and everyday contexts such as choosing providers for your internet or gas, and how these processes could be a lot more inclusive and accessible.

In part 2 of No One Size Fits All, legal experts and mental health advocates discuss informed decision making, human rights and ethics in the context of mental health legislation. And, we ask the experts about how international rights conventions such as the UNCPRD inform and shape State-based legislation like the Mental Health Act.

In A Whole New Language, we look at what early intervention means, and how it works for different population groups. We talk about research projects that are looking at best practice early intervention and developing tools that can be used in a range of cultures, and we hear about the changing landscape of early intervention under the NDIS. We discuss what early intervention looks like for families, and how every journey is different.
