AU CAREER PHD NEWSLETTER

December 2015

Happy holidays!

We wish you all a merry Christmas and

a happy New Year.

The office is closed from December 18th until January 4th 2016.       In the meantime we will keep you posted on events, relevant articles and offer you a bit of light entertainment on our Facebook page.

PhD Career Day 2015

On November 23rd PhD Career Day went ahead and we were pleased to see so many eager PhD students and postdocs.

Even though the considerable increase in participants took us by surprise in the last days leading up to the event, we still received a lot of positive feedback on the event from both students and companies. Several companies expressed that they were pleased to see so many qualified and potential candidates and that they would be very interested in participating in the event next year.

So thank you for a great day and for all of you who took the time to respond to our evaluation. We will be sure to find a bigger location next year.

"The event was an eye opener. I had no idea the job market looks so promising"

"Good company representation. A bit crowded, but not a problem since there was so much time for everybody to get a chance to talk"

"It was great that there were so many companies and I think the 2 min. presentations worked very well. A larger room and more people from each company would have been nice"

"The event was very well planned, and I was happy to have the opportunity to be presented to some possible future employers"

EVENTS

In 2016 a range of our established events are going to continue as they are. Others are going to change slightly by introducing new speakers or companies in order for us to give you a fair presentation of what awaits you outside academia.

Such events include our alumni events. In 2015 these events were organised around faculties and presenting alumni from one of these faculties.

In 2016 we are going to undertake a more assignment-oriented approach to these events. Exemplifying this are two of our alumni events, PhD Horizons: Communication and PhD Horizons: Entrepreneurial. The events will include alumni presentations from different faculties working within either communication or entrepreneurship. In addition to talking about their current position, their thoughts on career choice and paths, the alumni will emphasise the interdisciplinarity in their work place.

Online booking - career counselling

The new online booking system is up and running and individual counselling sessions with Vibeke Broe are now available for 2016.

Individual counselling is a core element in the work we do and the services we provide in AU Career PhD. In one-on-one talks, we can discuss your career options, which competencies that are required when applying for jobs outside the university, give you feedback on your CV and cover letter, do’s and don’ts at job interviews and much more – it is up to you and your individual needs.

We are present in Aarhus and Foulum, but are on request in Flakkebjerg, Roskilde and Emdrup.

AU Mentor PhD

Our mentor programme has during the last six months offered yet again successful matches between PhD students and mentors from the industry.

Up until now, we have had two annual dates of application. However, in the future there will only be one date of application, which next year will be August 15th

Career Talks

Do you have specific questions for a profile working outside academia? Then Career Talks may be just the thing for you! We are now offering to help you set up a meeting with a PhD profile that you find interesting. This is intended for those who want to know more about a particular company or job function and are not interested in a longer and more time consuming mentor relation.

Check out our website for more information, Career Talks profiles and how to sign up.
