INSTITUTE OF TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS STUDIES NEWSITLS welcomes the High Commissioner of Mauritius
ITLS welcomed the High Commissioner of Maurtius, His Excellency Patrick Cavalot, to the research and training expertise of ITLS. Opportunities to apply ITLS expertise in BRT research was one of the topics discussed with the High Commissioner and Professor Hensher of ITLS. BRT is a state of the art transport system which could provide rapid access and connectivity throughout the island. Investments in public transport infrastructure is also an opportunity to focus attention on the skills and knowledge needed to support a new generation of public transport professionals in Mauritius - a focus of a potential partnership between Dr Moutou of ITLS and colleagues in Mauritius. Veronique Van Acker
Dr Veronique Van Acker is on a research visit to ITLS and is working with Professor Mulley and Dr Ma on improving our understanding on our perceptions of the built environment, travel behaviour and lifestyle. Some of her conference papers on lifestyles and attitudes have received best paper awards including the Fred Burggraf Award at TRB. Her PhD was awarded with the Eric Pas Dissertation Prize 2010 (by the International Association for Travel Behaviour Research), the BIVEC-GIBET PhD Award 2011 (by the Benelux Interuniversity Association of Transport Economists) and the Mercator-Ortelius Prize 2014 (by the University of Antwerp). Recent ITLS Seminars
ITLS has had a number of seminars with a distinct public transport theme. On 6th of October, Margy Osmond, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism & Transport Forum presented on "Public transport's role in unlocking economic productivity" and highlighted the role of a well-functioning transport system in improving Australia's economic performance. The Tourism and Transport Forum has worked with long time ITLS partners PwC to quantify the economic uplift delivered by public transport infrastructure investment. Her talk covered the appropriate role of the different tiers of government in transport planning and funding and the potential of alternative funding models. (Image source: Moutou 2015) On the 24th of November, Professor Stephane Hess, University of Leeds, UK, talked to the topic "How much do travellers value time: new evidence from the UK" reporting work undertaken for the UK government to estimate new values for travel time. The value that travellers place on the time they spend travelling is one of the most important measures used in the appraisal of new transport infrastructure and policy schemes. Before this latest study, the values for travel time in use were based on data collected in 1994 and modelling done in 2003. Over the last 20 years, these values have been updated for demographic change but not for the numerous changes in how people travel, in technology and in the way data is collected and modelled. Some of these improvements have been pioneered by researchers at ITLS and are now embodied in the new values. Whether these are transferred to the Australian context remains to be seen. Researchers at ITLS showed a strong presence at the 14th International Conference on Competition and Ownership in Land Passenger Transport (Thredbo 14), Santiago, Chile, 3rd September 2015. The following papers were presented there:
ATRF: Australasian Transport Research Forum
The Australasian Transport Research Forum (ATRF) is the principal transport research conference in Australia and New Zealand, bringing together transport researchers, policymakers, advisors and practitioners to discuss research issues. In 2015, the 37th occasion of ATRF was hosted in Sydney by Transport for NSW and UNSW from 30 September to 2 October. All members of the public transport team have co-authored papers presented at this conference. The presentations are available at our website. Please click the links below to download.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT EDUCATION
Save the dates for Certificate of Transport Management in 2016In 2016 the Certificate of Transport Management will be run from Wednesday 6 July to Saturday 9 July. The four day professional development course is an opportunity for those working in the bus, coach and community transport sectors to gain a better understanding of the different aspects of the business. Certificate in Railway Planning and OperationsDr Nigel Harris will be returning to ITLS to teach the Certificate of Railway Planning and Operations on the 13-15 July 2016. Registrations will open in the new year. ITLS6103: Sustainable Transport Policy courseProfessor Corinne Mulley and Dr Claudine Moutou will be teaching the Sustainable Transport Policy unit (ITLS6103) together in Semester 1, 2016. The unit of study is offered as part of the Masters of Transport Management and the Transport Planning specialisation of the Masters of Commerce. Interested in further education but not quite ready to become a university student? Participants can enrol as a non-award student as well. For further details please contact the Editors of Bus Buzz. Scholarships to study Masters of Transport ManagementWe are currently looking for outstanding domestic students for the Master of Transport Management as there is some potential for financial support in 2016 for excellent candidates. Interested potential students should contact matthew.beck@sydney.edu.au or geoffrey.clifton@sydney.edu.au RESEARCH PROJECTSHenry Halloran Trust funding to develop evidence about public transport, health and land useProfessor Mulley is part of two exciting new projects, recently funded by the Henry Halloran Trust. The first is looking at including health and health equity in strategic land use planning with colleagues from the Menzies Centre, Architecture and Planning at the University and South West Sydney and Sydney local health authorities. The second, is looking at the urban design impacts on health using the largest cohort study in the Southern Hemisphere to provide an evidence base for policy in this area. This is with colleagues from public health at the Universities of Sydney and James Cook. Both projects provide the opportunity to understand better the role of public transport and provide greater evidence for policy to enhance use. OTHER NEWSSydney Bus MuseumThe official opening of the Sydney Bus Museum will take place in 2016, but BusBuzz editors will be among the people attending the Preview Night on the 16 December. We are keen to see the museum become a tourist attraction like its counterparts overseas, bringing not only nostalgia but also capturing the social and historical importance of transport in shaping the everyday lives of Sydneysiders.
