FreeStyle Libre improves type 1 diabetes control says ABCD audit

The FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system improves control in people with type 1 diabetes during the first six months of use, according to a nationwide audit.

The first milestone results of 1,299 people with type 1 diabetes from the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) audit were presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 79th Scientific Session earlier this month.

NaDIA reveals diabetes specialist staff increase

The number of Diabetes Inpatient Specialist Nurses has increased by 19%, according to the latest findings from the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit.

Hospital Characteristics from 2018 collected through the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) also showed that the number of diabetes consultants has gone up by 14%, while podiatrists have increased by 47% and dietitians were up by 87%.

New JBDS chair announced

The new chair of an influential group of senior inpatient clinicians has pledged to “continue to improve” the care for people with diabetes in hospital.

Professor Ketan Dhatariya has been announced as the new chair of the Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care group (JBDS – IP), taking over from Professor Mike Sampson.

Leading podiatrist ‘concerned’ over diabetes amputation rise

The rise in major amputations among people with diabetes is “concerning” and more needs to be done to prevent this “life-changing” complication, according to a leading podiatrist.

Graham Bowen is a Southampton-based Podiatry Clinical Service Manager who has pledged to tackle the issue head-on by leading a dedicated conference programme for healthcare professionals at Diabetes Professional Care 2019 (DPC2019) in October.

Pharmacy group calls for biosimilar name change

The UK’s association for clinical pharmacists has written to Sanofi calling for the company to “revisit” brand names for current and future biosimilar insulins.

The UKCPA Diabetes & Endocrine Committee said it had an issue over the naming of Insulin Lispro Sanofi® (insulin lispro 100 Units/mL) because it includes the drug’s generic name.
