South Brisbane Recognised as a Key Brisbane Global Precinct

South Brisbane (including Kurilpa) has been recognised as one of eight Brisbane precincts with the potential to help Brisbane attract investment, foster innovation, encourage tourism and elevate its international reputation as a new world city.

A global precincts strategic vision, released by Brisbane City Council and its economic development board Brisbane Marketing, has identified an approach to evolving the city’s precincts through partnerships with investors and stakeholders.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the vision set out a coordinated approach for Brisbane to be an internationally recognised city in which to live, learn, invest and grow; through the development of specialised precincts around the city and suburbs.

The eight priority areas are:

  • South Brisbane (including Kurilpa)
  • Boggo Road/PA Hospital/University of Queensland
  • Herston/Kelvin Grove
  • Upper Mt Gravatt/Eight Mile Plains
  • City Reach
  • City West
  • Australia TradeCoast
  • Valley Gateway

These precincts span 10km and their combined contribution to the city accounts for 37 per cent of employment, more than 60 per cent of exports and 49 per cent of gross regional product.

State Library to Replicate and Digitise Rare Queensland-made Braille Globe

An intricate Braille globe invented in Queensland in the 1950s will be reimagined for a new generation of Queenslanders thanks to the power of a crowd funding initiative by Queensland Library Foundation.

The globe was originally created for vision-impaired children by Queenslander Richard Frank Tunley, known as the ‘Fairy Godfather of Blind Children’, who dedicated his life to improving outcomes for vision-impaired children and adults, producing Braille globes and maps.

The funding will enable State Library to use photogrammetry and 3D printing technologies to create an exact replica of the globe able to be touched as the original was intended to be experienced, accompanied by detailed digital plans and learning notes available for sharing internationally.

State Librarian and CEO Vicki McDonald said the Tunley globe is a marvel of Queensland ingenuity, enterprise and skill. The original Tunley globe will be on display in an upcoming SLQ exhibition in the Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery on level 4, opening in December 2017.

LIFE IS THE HEART OF A RAINBOW
4 Nov 2017 – 11 Feb 2018  | FREE

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is an international phenomenon. Her beguiling creations and unique perspective, irrepressibly expressed across a career of more than 60 years, have made her a pre-eminent figure in 21st century contemporary art.

A focused survey of Kusama's vast body of work since the 1950s, 'Life is the Heart of a Rainbow' explores her key motifs, her engagement with the body, and her conception of space. It includes early painterly experiments, a multi-decade presentation of her celebrated 'net' paintings, performance, soft-sculpture, assemblage, the iconic 'infinity rooms' and large-scale installations of her later career.

During the exhibition, Kusama’s iconic work in Gallery's Collection Narcissus Garden (1966/2002) is on display in the Watermall at QAG, and the Children's Art Centre at GOMA hosts the immersive interactive The obliteration room (2002 – ongoing), a collaboration between the artist and QAGOMA which debuted at ‘The 4th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ and has since been experienced by more than five million people at venues around the world.
