DREAM-Atlanta Study Update

The DREAM-Atlanta Study, funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities and led by Dr. Megha Shah, kicked off in December 2019.  This is an 18-month study of the implementation of a community health worker-led intervention for South Asian patients with diabetes and hypertension at Emory Family Medicine at Dunwoody, Grady Brookhaven, and the Shifa Clinic.  Eligible patients will be randomized to the intervention group or usual care.  The intervention will consist of 5 health education group sessions over 6 months.  Topics will include culturally tailored diet, exercise, and medication adherence education.

In addition, the DREAM-Atlanta Study has hired a project coordinator,  Christina Gibbs, MSc. Christina is a clinical research coordinator and serves as the main project coordinator for DREAM-Atlanta.  Originally from the Atlanta-area, she received her bachelors’ degree and Master’s in Global Health from Duke University.  She is based at the Dunwoody clinic. Three community health workers, Zohra Amin, Hasan Yousef, and Sakila Nasrin, have also joined the DREAM-Atlanta team. The DREAM-Atlanta Study team is pictured below (left to right): Zohra Amin, Hasan Yousuf, Christina Gibbs, Sakila Nasrin.

Zohra, Sakila, and Hasan have just completed Community Health Worker core competency training with Sergio Matos, the executive director of the Community Health Worker Network of NYC.

Being of Service

Doctor for a Day needs you

The Doctor for a Day conference provides high school and college students, with an interest in pursuing a medical career, the opportunity to meet with accomplished physicians, medical admission board directors, and medical students from all over the state! The conference is one of the projects created by Emory Cardiology Fellow Heval Kelli and his Young Physician Initiative.

If you are a medical professional, here are four simple ways to support the conference:

1. We invite you to attend the networking lunch segment (12:30-1:30) and meet students from underserved backgrounds interested in medicine.
We ask medical professionals to either wear white coats  or scrubs so the students can recognize you.
2. Fund the Young Physician Initiative and the conference by donating to our organization. YPI is part of U-Beyond Mentorship, a 501(c)(3) public charity organization. Financial donations are tax exempt (Tax Id: 81-2964358)
https://www.ypiprogram.com/
3. Donate raffle items (new preferred) such as MCAT prep books, anatomy cards or stethoscopes.  Items can be mailed to:
Attn: Heval Kelli, YPI
5345 Catalpa Court
Lilburn, GA 30047
4. Be part of the YPI Volunteer Professionals and be involved when you have time.

DeSandre chosen as Harvard Macy Fellow

Congratulations to Dr. Paul DeSandre, who was accepted to the Harvard Macy Institute as 1 of 12 Fellows in Art Museum-based Health Professions Education!

This is a highly experiential Fellowship, with exposure and opportunity to practice a variety of pedagogical methods used in art museum- based education, including Visual Thinking Strategies, the Personal Responses Tour, as well as applications of metaphor and mindful practice. This Fellowship will demonstrate concrete ways that the art museum environment is a productive space to foster health professional skills and attitudes, including:

  • Honing observation and interpretation skills
  • Uncovering assumptions and biases
  • Professionalism and professional identity formation
  • Multidisciplinary teamwork
  • Navigating ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Promoting empathy, compassion, and wellness

In addition to learning the theory and practice of art museum-based health professions education, Fellows will prepare to cultivate generative partnerships with museums and museum educator colleagues. We look forward to seeing the results!

In your Inbox: SOM Diversity Engagement Survey

You should have received an email recently from the School of Medicine about the Diversity Engagement Survey (DES). The School of Medicine remains committed to building a culture that is inclusive, equitable, safe, and respectful for everyone in our community. We continually strive to implement practices that directly address the needs of our faculty, learners, and staff. To that end, we are launching a survey to gather your input on diversity and inclusion within the School of Medicine.

The school-wide workforce & engagement survey conducted in September 2019 contained five questions related to diversity and inclusion. The DES will complement the information we received through the earlier survey and provide more detailed insights that will help us focus our work.

The deadline for completing the survey is February 5, 2020. It will only take about 10 minutes to complete. Please answer as openly as possible. Your responses will go directly to the survey vendor and will remain strictly confidential. The School of Medicine will only receive the combined, aggregated feedback.

CTSA Grant Wise Program seeks volunteer mentors

The new Georgia CTSA Grant Wise service offers the opportunity for one-on-one feedback from experienced senior faculty on grant writing. If you have experience in writing grants and you enjoy mentoring, we need you!

Volunteer Expectations:

Requests for mentoring range from developing a timeline, reviewing Specific Aims, writing and editing the text, or responding to reviewer comments.

Mentors will be paired with mentees by a member of the Collaboration & Multi-disciplinary Team Science Steering Team based on field, expertise, and interests. We anticipate that each experienced faculty volunteer will be asked to advise one junior colleague in preparing a grant no more than once a year. We do not anticipate that mentors will become collaborators, although that option exists should both parties agree. The specific time commitment and expectations for each pair will be determined and agreed upon by the requester and consultant themselves following an initial meeting. We anticipate that consultation responsibilities will be limited to the duration of the project.

Volunteer:

If you would like to be added to our list of mentors, please complete this brief online form. This form is only used to indicate your interest and does not commit you to anything. We will be in touch should we receive a request that matches your expertise.
