Thyroid Disorders Can Affect Men's Sexual Health

Did you know your thyroid is important for your overall health? This small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck produces hormones that help regulate your metabolism, heartbeat, body temperature, and more.

Thyroid disorders appear to be linked to sexual problems in men, too, although scientists aren't certain why.  For example, some studies have shown that men with thyroid conditions are more likely to have erectile dysfunction (ED) than men without thyroid disorders.

In our latest blog post, we give an overview of the thyroid gland and two of the most common disorders: hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid).  We also go over some of the research on thyroid conditions and men's sexual health.

Flavonoids May Reduce Erectile Dysfunction Risk

Men, do you like blueberries, strawberries, and citrus fruits? If you do, you might be in luck. Eating compounds called flavonoids, which are found in these foods, might decrease your risk for erectile dysfunction (ED).

Flavonoids are antioxidants found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and beverages.  In a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, men who ate a flavonoid-rich diet were less likely to have ED when compared to men who did not eat this diet.

Testosterone Gel Might Boost Libido in Older Men

As men get older, their testosterone levels gradually decline. It's just part of nature, but the results - fatigue and low sex drive - can be troublesome.

However, new research might offer some hope. A recent study in the Journal of Urology found that for some older men, testosterone replacement therapy could restore hormonal levels to a normal range and improve libido.

Scientists worked with a group of 715 men with lower-than-normal testosterone levels. The men's average age was 55. For twelve weeks, roughly half of the men applied a testosterone gel to their skin once daily. The rest of the men used a placebo gel.

Those who used testosterone reported more interest in sex than the men in the placebo group. The therapy also brought hormone levels back to normal for about three-quarters of the men in the testosterone group.

More research is still needed. Please click here for more details.
