Science lab news

A kindergarten youngster asked me if the Science Lab was like the Science Center where he goes with his mom. The question inspired me to change the name of the lab to the Mark C. Krotec Science Center. It will be clearer for young children. The new name also implies that science lessons and activities, as well as experiments, occur in that space. Our new Science Center is being used by more students each week. Stop by and see it during Open House on September 26 (more information below).

Making the crossing safer at Shady and Alder

A Holy Ground Action initiated by the Calvary Episcopal Church PIIN Team and supported by Sacred Heart School and the DePaul School is planned for 12:15 p.m. Sunday, September 29 on the lawn in front of Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Ave. The group is working with Dan Gilman, Chief of Staff for City Council Rep. Bill Peduto and other city officials to come up with solutions to the pedestrian safety issue at Shady Avenue and Alder Street. It would be wonderful to have some SHES parents join the gathering.

Free tuition raffle

Tickets for a free tuition for 2013-14 are available at the school office. They will also be sold at the Open House on Thursday, September 26. One ticket is $25; 5 tickets cost $100. Make check payable to Sacred Heart Parish School Science Lab. The drawing will take place at the Green Tie Gala on Saturday, November 2. The winner need not be present, although it would be wonderful if the winner was at the celebration.

SHES Open House

The Sacred Heart PTG Meeting and Open House is at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, September 26. The meeting agenda, which begins at 6:45 in the cafeteria, will focus on:

  1. All Hazard Planning

  3. Science Lab / 4th Annual Gala

Meetings with the teachers will follow the general meeting. Meet your child's teachers and begin the 140th anniversary year at Sacred Heart School with exciting new experiences for everyone.

Cross Country team working hard

By Chesca Bowser
Assistant cross country coach

With prayer before each run, Sacred Heart's cross country has had a promising start to the season.

At the September 8th meet at Frick, the results were:

  • JV girls placed 2nd overall
  • JV boys placed 1st overall
  • Varsity girls 1st overall
  • Varsity boys 2nd overall

The second meet of the season, held at the very steep and difficult course at Boyce park on September 15, showed our runners handling the challenge.

The results:

  • JV girls-2nd place overall
  • JV boys- 2nd place overall
  • Varsity girls-1st place

Each and every runner's determination to push themselves through sweat and tears showed in their performance. It is truly inspirational to watch them finish each race despite pain endured.

Coach Julie Brennan's dedication to not only improve the children's abilities but gift them with the love of running is obvious during the workouts she plans for them.

Meanwhile the benefit for me as the assistant, struggling to keep up with the least experienced of the runners during practice, is the unbridled joy I feel as each runner improves.

The newsletter will come from newsletter@sacredheartpgh.org, as this one did. Other school emails will come from admin@sacredheartpgh.org

If you are not getting school emails or newsletters, check your spam folder. If they are in there, mark them NOT SPAM to help future ones get to your inbox. You can also try adding the two addresses above to your contacts.

If they are not in your spam folder, contact the office to make sure the school has your correct current email address.

How do I subscribe to the school calendar?

The monthly calendar will continue to be available on the school website and will not be sent home on paper.

If you use Google calendar, you can subscribe to Sacred Heart's calendar by clicking on the +Google Calendar link at the bottom of our calendar on the school website.

What happens if I unsubscribe?

The email newsletter contains an option to unsubscribe because this is an Internet rule. We recommend you do not unsubscribe because this information will not be sent home in any other form.

How do I submit news for the newsletter?

To submit news, forms, or other information to the newsletter, email it to newsletter@sacredheartpgh.org.

October's food: Stuffing mix

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect stuffing mix to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
