From the editors...

The student newsletter is produced every fortnight by the Internal Communications team so we can share news, announcements, selected events and some requests for help. 

If you wish to communicate around the University, the newsletter is just one way to do that. Please check our Methods of Internal Communication webpage, and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

The next newsletter will distributed on Wednesday 25 January - the deadline is 4pm on Friday 20 January.

Exam Results

Exam results will be issued on Friday 13 January in a phased manner. Please keep checking the IT Status webpage to find out if your results are available in eVision on the day, and keep an eye on the One Dundee Twitter for live updates on which School results are released.

50th anniversary podcasts launch on Friday 13 January

2017 will see us celebrate our 50th anniversary as an independent university. As part of our celebrations, we'll be sharing weekly podcasts about the University and the city. Stay tuned to the University Twitter page for the launch of the first podcast this Friday. #dundeeuni50

Learn a language in 2017 - new courses start next week

Language courses start again from Monday 16 January 2017 for beginners, but if you have prior knowledge of a language that you'd like to develop, you can join the existing classes.

Post intermediate English classes for mixed levels start on Thursday 19 January for 10 weeks.

Fully funded PhDs pathways - applications open

The University welcomes applications for fully-funded PhDs to eight disciplinary pathways, as part of the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (a Doctoral Training Partnership funded by ESRC).

The disciplines and Dundee contacts are:

There is an open competition, plus four focused competitions – Advanced Quantitative Methods; ESRC Datasets; Interdisciplinary with another Research Council; and Skills Development Scotland. In addition, there is a Collaborative competition, where the PhD is a partnership with an external organisation.

Mountain of tablet brings almost £60,000 to cancer research

A mountain of homemade tablet - quite literally, because if you stacked it up it would be taller than Ben Nevis - has helped raise almost £60,000 for breast cancer research.

Fiona Edwards (formerly staff at the University) has been selling her homemade tablet since 2003 to support breast cancer research at the University.

‘Molecular volume control’ may help combat tumours

Researchers at Dundee and Bath have uncovered new functions of an enzyme called Dual-specificity phosphatase 5 (DUSP5), which will help scientists to better understand how tumours develop. One day, it might even be used to manipulate enzyme activity in order to control the development and treatment of cancer.

The Library and Learning Centre is committed to improving your service, so understanding your expectations better will help them to tailor their services - please share your thoughts by completing the annual survey.

Blackwell's pop up bookshop

From Monday 16 January until Friday 3 February, the Main Library will host a Blackwell's pop up bookshop on the ground floor in Wolfson Room 1. The shop will be open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

Digital January

Digital January launched on Monday and runs until Friday 3 February. Each day (Mon-Fri) a digital application or tool will be featured online, which can assist with teaching, assessment, or can just help to make life easier. So get organised, get creative and be more digital in 2017!

CAREERS service
Leadership in Practice

The Leadership in Practice programme offers students a fantastic opportunity to develop key skills in a fun and intellectually challenging environment.

The programme is run by Tayforth Universities Officer Training Corps (TUOTC) and has been designed to develop you personally as a leader and team member. It comprises six modules - Positive Personal Impact, Followership, Leadership, Effective Communication, Time Management and Planning - and none of the course content or practical exercises are overly physical or demanding. All we ask is that you commit to attending all six sessions.

All of the Leadership in Practice modules will be conducted on city campus in the Dalhousie building on Tuesday evenings from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

In an increasingly competitive jobs market, it has never been so important to secure evidence of skills development. The Careers Service offers the opportunity to apply for the Dundee Plus Award, a great way to boost your CV by getting recognition for activities you do out with your academic life, such as part-time work, volunteering, student representation and participation in societies and sports clubs.

If you have participated in relevant extra-curricular activities then it’s time to get some recognition! All successful applicants will receive the Award and their application considered as a potential prize winner.

Are electronic cigarettes safer than traditional cigarettes?

Smokers in Tayside are being asked to help answer this vital question by taking part in a study by the School of Medicine which will compare the effects of e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes on blood vessel function, which is a key health indicator.

The study is looking for volunteers aged 18 years and over who have smoked 15 cigarettes a day for a minimum of two years and are prepared, if randomly allocated, to switch their regular cigarettes to e-cigarettes for one month.
