What a difference a year can make

Dear Friend

For many of us, there has never been a year of our lives when whales have not been hunted in the Antarctic Ocean.

But this year is different. This summer there will be no whaling.

In March this year the highest court on the planet, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), handed down their landmark decision that Japan’s so-called ‘scientific whaling’ program in the Southern Ocean was illegal and must stop immediately.

The 65th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) starts tomorrow and I'll be there to represent AMCS and the whales.

It's a crucial meeting as Japan is expected to announce its plans to circumvent the court ruling and recommence Antarctic whaling for the summer of 2015-16.

If these plans are to be curtailed - this is the time and the place.

We need to make sure the Government of Japan hears loud and clear that we don't want Japan to return to hunting Southern Ocean whales.

It's time to make this year’s halt in the Southern Ocean whale hunt a permanent one.

Thank you for all that you do

P.S

I’ve attended IWC meetings for the past decade, fighting for whale conservation and working towards a legal end to ‘scientific’ whaling in the Southern Ocean. You can read my updates on the meeting here.
