Opening Words from the Executive Principal

Kia ora tatou, good afternoon, 你好, 안녕하세요

It feels like the school has moved up the gears again this week. The car park has been full past 5 pm most days with Art, Chinese and Bricks 4 Kidz classes for Primary students, sports practices for students of all ages, and of course our College conferences on Tuesday and Thursday. I hope the parents who attended found them useful: I’d encourage all parents to come along, and if you need a longer period of time to talk with a particular teacher, please just make an appointment. Our teachers are always keen to talk to you.

I’ve just had a chat with one of our Year 13 students, actually. She’s applying to universities here, in the UK and in the US, and is – as you would expect – very busy! Our senior students especially have a lot happening at the moment (mind you, our younger students are just as busy, and have very complicated schedules) and we all need to be keeping a careful eye on their commitments. Being busy and having lots to do is brilliant – I love that our children have so many commitments and activities – and we need to make sure that they don’t over-commit.

Still on this theme, I’m going to mention our most famous alumni now: Lydia Ko. The LPGA is starting up again at the moment, and Lydia has just posted a letter to her 15 year old self. It’s a fascinating read about staying true to your values and always remembering to be who you are, and you can read the piece HERE. I’m going to quote in full the last paragraph, though, because I think they’re wise words: the voice of experience. She’s telling her 15 year old self that she should always be herself, open, friendly and with a huge laugh! That’s good advice for all of us, I’d say.

“Finally, young Lydia, that instinct you have to remain approachable and engaging is the right one. The laugh that people can hear from the tennis courts and know that it’s you, that is something you should never change, no matter how self-conscious you sometimes feel. When you recognize a volunteer and want to say ‘hi,’ don’t hesitate. Don’t worry about how it looks. Be yourself, first and always. If you do that, words like “brand” and “image;” “platform” and “presence,” will take care of themselves. Be you. And be happy. Do that, and everything else is going to be fine.”

I was lucky enough on Monday to be able to see four of our Primary hockey teams play: Mr Taylor has done a great job with our children, and I was pleased to see how enthusiastic and competitive they were! I also had the chance to see some basketball: the Panthers and the Pirates were playing each other. Some very talented little players on display, and it was lovely to see the happy, enthusiastic support of our parents too. Kidzplay starts on Saturday as well, so I’m looking forward to seeing some netball.

Finally, you will notice at the end of the newsletter an advertisement for Head Held High. We are very pleased that they will be offering Speech and Drama classes at our school. This was a suggestion from a parent, so please keep sending your suggestions to me!

Have a lovely weekend.

Marija Naumovska

Marija has been teaching at Pinehurst School since 2014, where she currently teaches music to our College students and holds the Head of Visual and Performing Arts role.

She has collaborated with the University of Auckland teacher training programme and has a real passion for conducting, music education, developing educational music resources and presenting. In 2019 Marija developed the Unwrap of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A, an educational documentary about the work, in collaboration with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. This year Marija continues to collaborate with the Orchestra..

Marija lists the growth of the Pinehurst Orchestra and its success in the competitive field as one of her top successes since joining the school. Her teaching approach is rooted in aligning the material to the students’ passion and strength.

Her goal since joining Pinehurst school was to grow the already developed music programme which now includes 18 itinerant music specialists, and offers a number of free co-curricular groups to students, through which they can develop their performance skills and foster their love of music. With the formation of the Arts Student Council in 2019, the drama, art and music students of the school are gaining a well-deserved acknowledgement in our community.

Kia Ora,

Thank you to all the parents who attended parent conferences this week. It is always great to catch up with so many of you. The conferences not only provide valuable feedback to you on your child’s progress, but they also strengthen the connections within our community which play such a vital role in supporting our young people. In the following weeks we look forward to hosting many of you again with the IGCSE Information Evening for Year 9 parents on Monday 10th August, and the AS and A Level Information Evening the following week on Monday 17 August.

We are in the process of finalising our option lines for all of these students for 2021. As we continue to grow as a school we are able to offer even greater flexibility in both the range of subjects and the number of classes that we provide for a variety of subjects. This is significant in ensuring that our students are well-placed to select a programme that connects coherently with their aspirations.

In the past week I have been fortunate to watch some of our sports teams play. It reminded me of the range of character strengths that are built through involvement in team activities. Our Junior Boys Football team played brilliantly at Waitakere College and showed real grit and determination in striving to win the game. Our Year 7/8 Netball team had a tough day at their zone day, but they again showed resilience even when the score board was significantly against them in one match. Next week we have our rescheduled Year 9-13 Swimming Sports. There will no doubt be some outstanding performances from our top swimmers, but equally there will be a few students that haven’t been near a pool for a while who will be trying their best to earn their House some valuable points.

Nga Mihi,

Kieran Verryt

Week 2 – Senior Multi-Sport on Wednesday and Friday lunchtime in the gym.

Year 9 Ice-cream Container Project

Recently all of our Year 9 students were involved in a Measurement Project in their Mathematics classes. Each student had to put on their designer hat and also use their mathematics abilities, to create an interesting shape for an ice-cream container that would hold 1.5 litres.

We were amazed by our students’ creativity and skills in calculating the volumes of their designs. Apart from the design, mathematics and assembly of the container, students were then asked to evaluate their design in terms of practicality of storage or transportation. The students enjoyed this project immensely.

NH Zone Day Netball

It was an great day on Wednesday for our Year 8 Netball team, who attended the first NH Zone Day event held for quite some time! The girls had a really good day, and although the results didn’t always go our way, the focus this year is primarily on enjoyment & confidence on the court. Pinehurst finished in 12th place, a good result for our young team. Thank you to Marcia, Suzanne & Anne for supporting the girls on the day.

Table Tennis

The Senior College Table Tennis Team started a professional coaching training session on Tuesday with Adrian Soh, current parent and NZ Senior Table Tennis Team representative, once ranked 5th in NZ.

17 Senior Table Tennis players are taking part in the training for Term 3.

Pinehurst School is very grateful to Albert Chang, North Shore Table Tennis https://www.sporty.co.nz/northshoretta/Clubs-1/North-Shore-Club# for donating a brand new table tennis table and bats for our students to practice on. This was organised through our new table tennis coach Adrian Soh. Albert and Adrian are both very passionate about table tennis and like to encourage people of all ages and abilities to play.

We would also like to thank Rodney Bygrave from Rodney’s Table Tennis https://rodneystabletennis.co.nz/ for delivering the table to our school.

Kia Ora,

We had a number of new students at the start of this term and it has been wonderful to watch them join in, learn routines and make new friendships. They are very settled and seem to be enjoying school life. Classrooms are abuzz and programmes are well underway at all levels of the Primary. As teachers, we spend time together carefully planning units of work in order to make the most of every opportunity to add value to learning. We are prepared and ready from the first day of term until the last.

One of the aspects of our school that we were keen to get up and running again after Lockdown is student leadership. Online it was difficult for our student leaders to do the things they had planned for the year but they do have lots of ideas. Our Arts Council liked the idea of having some fun outdoor activities for Primary students and have been running lunchtime discos. Last Friday it was the turn of our New to 2 syndicate and they had an absolute ball dancing on the playground with their friends. One of our Year 6 students loves to DJ and brought in his sound system to run the event with the help of some friends and the Arts Councillors. Everyone had lots of fun and especially the teachers who knew all of the songs of course!

Assemblies are a little different this term and will be held every other week for Years 0-4. This gives Years 5 and 6 the chance to rehearse for Lion King. This week our assembly was led by Year 3 and the stand out performance was the Matariki Macarena. What a wonderful surprise to see so many parents be brave enough to join in at the front with their children, they had obviously been practising at home!

I had a very in-depth conversation with Hadleigh in Year 1 this week about Harry Potter and the various storylines in each of the books. It served to remind me of the magic that books can bring at all stages of life. I have always been obsessed with reading and have several books on the go at once. There are millions of others like me and if your child loves to read you are very fortunate as they will get so much pleasure from reading as well as opportunities to develop vocabulary, sentence structure, imagination and knowledge. If your child doesn’t have a natural love of reading you may need to find some different ways to ensure that they read each day. I was convinced I would have a child who would read Harry Potter but alas that was not to be the case, although an excellent reader he wasn’t interested in fiction and I had to be content with him reading the things that interested him, even if that was usually instructions on how to set up a computer or run a coding programme.

Forcing a child to read does not foster a love of reading although minimum expectations can be set. Using a timer for 10 minutes and allowing your child to stop when it goes off can be a way to slowly build up the amount of time they read. Finding fun reading challenges online and a mini reward system can also help. Daily reading is a must but it doesn’t need to be a chore, let them read about topics that interest them, set them a quiz or an activity such as drawing a picture, designing a book jacket or planning a party for the characters in the book. There are so many ways to generate interest in reading. It may take time but it will pay off in the long run.

Have a lovely weekend.

Nga Mihi,

Sian Coxon, Principal of Primary

Junior Disco

Last Friday our wonderful Primary Arts and Cultural Team put together an ‘outdoor’ disco for our Year 1-2 students. A spectacular array of dancers could be spotted strutting their moves at lunchtime with the teachers also dusting off a few of their sensational disco grooves.

Edward Maclean is our resident DJ, and thanks to his supportive Mum, he set up an amazing sound system and provided the hugely popular soundtrack.

We were amazed at the very fancy footwork and great sense of rhythm we saw on the door floor.

We look forward to taking this lunchtime event of fun to the Year 3 and 4 students next.

P2’s Midnight Garden

Welcome to P2’s Midnight Garden, where Year 1 students have been learning all about nocturnal and diurnal animals. We have explored our senses by discussing what you can hear, see, smell and touch outside at night-time.

In Literacy, we have investigated facts about nocturnal animals and used the information we have gathered to create story maps. It is always fun to practice our story maps with actions and 'Kung Fu' punctuation.

For this weeks’ Big Write, we were all able to write descriptions on bats and owls using incredible facts and adjectives. Ask us to tell you some fun facts about these amazing animals!

In Art, we used a range of materials to create midnight scenes that included bats, owls and hedgehogs.

P7 Matisse Snails

Year 2 students in P7 have been inspired by Henri Matisse with this weeks art pieces. After looking at the art piece “The snail” the students created a collage of a snail. They practiced layering coloured pieces to create a collage. After their piece was completed each student critiqued their work and commented on their buddies work.

Emily felt that she coloured the snail body and head in well and her next steps were to cover the snail shell better with the paper. Her buddy Ophelia thought the snail was cool and really liked the silver in it.

Amelia felt she covered the shell really well with collage. To improve her work she felt she could of made the body fatter. Her buddy April felt Amelia’s piece was good as there were no gaps when it was covered by paper collage.

Jimmie thought that he had blended the colours in the shell well and it looked really good. He felt he could of improved his work by colouring all the spaces so it looked much nicer. His buddy Toki thought the body was good and the face was cute.

Tyne really liked the colours he chose but felt he could of improved by not over covering the shell and making the body skinnier. His buddy Austin thought it was very neat.

Naya really liked the drawing of the shell but thought her next steps would be to cover in the white spaces with new paper. Her buddy thought she had done a great job.

Luna thought the colours of the shell were beautiful and it made her feel happy. She felt the snail could have been a bit bigger with the spiral having no gaps. Her buddy Chelsea thinks it is so pink and beautiful.

Caleb thought his art piece was good as the body was fat. His next steps would to make his shell wider. His buddy Ben said it was very impressive because of the snail and the coloured paper on the shell.

Participating and Contributing

In P14, Year 4 students have continued looking at key competencies and how they relate to us. Discussions have taken place about how key competencies are not just for school, but skills to help us in our everyday lives.

This week, we have been focusing on the key competency ‘participating and contributing’.

This key competency includes contributing to a group, being challenged to be involved, making connections with others and creating opportunities for others in a group. Participating and contributing is important because we know that we don’t learn much if we don’t participate and we get more out of interactions when we also contribute. We think that by participating with others, we learn different perspectives as well as strengthen our own thinking.

“If someone is stuck in the group and finding it hard to contribute, the other members of the group need to help them by asking questions and helping them contribute their ideas. You don’t just leave them out.” - Tiffany Catapang.

“Participating and contributing is about joining in group conversations and contributing your own ideas. You don’t have to feel scared or worried about mistakes or what you say.” - Neo Yang

“It’s when you learn from others by listening to what they are saying and understanding why they think that. You can tell them how you think even if it's different or you don’t agree but you have to do it in a respectful way.” - Freya Busby

Rock Band Performs in College Assembly

This week’s College Assembly was treated to a fantastic performance by one of our two Rock Bands, comprised of Jack Potier (drums), Tim Bao (bass guitar), Thomas Liu (piano), all in Year 9 and Alexander Lindsay (guitar) in Year 8. The group performed The Eye of the Tiger and instantly transported the teachers to the 80’s and the movie 'Rocky', where the song was featured. The Rock Bands are mentored by one of our itinerant piano teachers, Mr Ben Fernandez, who is also a Jazz specialist and runs the Jazz Band.
