Opening Books, Opening Doors

Combating the summer reading slide

Opening Books, Opening Doors is a community partnership to ensure all student's in the Coeur d'Alene School District exiting third grade experience a deep love of reading and meet grade level reading proficiency goals, including comprehension and fluency.  This project is a priority action in the CDA 2030 Implementation Plan, it is led by the Innovia Foundation and supported by the Coeur d'Alene School District, University of Idaho and CDA 2030.

Research shows giving kids 12 books to read over the summer is as effective as summer school.  Students who don’t read over the summer can lose up to two months of learning.  It’s more important than ever to ensure students don’t fall further behind.

Tips for encouraging a young reader this summer:

  • Find materials that interest your child, this could include magazines or comic strips
  • Break reading time into smaller periods throughout the day
  • Start a reading challenge at CDA Public Library or Community Library Network in Hayden
  • Encourage reading outside, or in different locations around your home
  • Take turns reading pages out loud, ask your child to make predictions as you read
