Research shows giving kids 12 books to read over the summer is as effective as summer school. Students who don’t read over the summer can lose up to two months of learning. It’s more important than ever to ensure students don’t fall further behind.
Tips for encouraging a young reader this summer:
-
Find materials that interest your child, this could include magazines or comic strips
-
Break reading time into smaller periods throughout the day
-
Start a reading challenge at CDA Public Library or Community Library Network in Hayden
-
Encourage reading outside, or in different locations around your home
-
Take turns reading pages out loud, ask your child to make predictions as you read
