The hot new bank fraud

Criminals constantly update their scams as their target audience becomes aware of their methods. The fastest-growing fraud tactic is vishing, a term coined by combining "voice" and "phishing", which sees fraudsters using voice instead of phishing (when potential targets are contacted via email, telephone or text message). According to the Ombudsman for Banking Services, credit card fraud has outpaced all other forms of bank fraud in recent months, with many older people, in particular, being duped by fraudsters posing as bank officials into revealing their one-time-password (OTP) over the phone.

Crowning the King of the Sea

The 10th annual Safire King of the Sea fishing challenge took place on 18-19 May on the KZN South Coast, pitting fisherfolk on kayaks, jet skis and ski boats against each other in a gamefish-only competition. This year’s winner is Kaden Leonard with his 14.15 kg couta, seen here receiving his winner’s cheque from Safire’s Bennie Boshoff. Is it a coincidence that on the 10-year birthday of the event, a 10-year-old landed the trophy fish? ;-) Prizes included cash along with holidays and getaways, fishfinders, fridge/freezers (to keep the fish and the refreshments chilled), fishing tackle and more. This event, held at Pumula Beach Hotel, isn’t just for those trying to land the big one. It’s a family-focused weekend, with great excitement as each catch is brought ashore, set against a backdrop of live music, wine tasting, the renowned Pumula seafood braai, and rugby on the big screen.  Congrats, Kaden, and thanks to all the enthusiastic fisher folk who supported the event. We look forward to seeing you in 2020!

The Insurance Crime Bureau

However, what do you do if the fraud isn’t a Safire matter? You tell the Insurance Crime Bureau (https://www.saicb.co.za/), a non-profit company dedicated to fighting organised insurance crimes and fraud. Their hotline number is 0860 002 526, SMS 32269, or email insurance@fraudline.co.za. Callers can remain anonymous if preferred. The Insurance Crime Bureau unites the collective resources of insurance companies, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders for the detection, prevention and mitigation of insurance crimes, and assists in the prosecution of repeat offenders and fraudsters.

Banishing car door dents and dings

We all know the irritation felt when a car door accidently bashes into something. Continental has won an innovation award at the Consumer Electronics Show for its clever door operation system, designed to prevent damage to your automotive pride and joy. The intelligent door brake system and the smart autonomous door both support convenient opening and closing operations, while stopping vehicle doors from uncontrolled slamming. In addition to increasing safety (no trapped fingers), reduced car damage and greater convenience, Continental said that the smart autonomous door system is necessary for automated driving. Driverless vehicles must be able to open and close their doors without operators or door handles to deal with different practical situations and allow passengers to get in and out conveniently. The intelligent door supports smooth opening in any position, so the door can be stopped securely in any position desired by the intelligent control system, without it slamming closed. Using static obstacle detection, the system also immediately stops the process of opening the vehicle door if an obstacle is identified
