Study Determines PGAD Prevalence in North America
The estimated prevalence rate for persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) ranges from 1% to 4% among North Americans, according to new research in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
However, the rates might be even higher, as many patients feel embarrassed about their situation and are reluctant to discuss it, the authors said.
PGAD is a chronic feeling of sexual arousal without sexual stimulation or the desire for sex. These feelings may last for days at a time.
The study findings are based on two cohorts. The first was a group of Canadian university students (average age 18). The second was a nationally representative sample from the United States (average age 46).
The researchers used criteria from previous research to explore the participants' experiences with PGAD.
