**Success Orientations Assembly date change from March 29 to Tuesday, April 2 2019-2020 School CalendarStart planning your vacations early! The 2019-2020 school calendar is now available on our school website. MSA (Middle States Association) Accreditation Team Visit ReviewCongratulations to the whole school community for an outstanding MSA visitation! The team was impressed by the kind atmosphere of our school, the hard work of our teachers, and the positive momentum we have taken this year. They found our students very welcoming and excited to chat, our staff very accommodating, and our school an outstanding place for children to learn and grow. The MSA visiting team will recommend to the Middle States Association that we receive full accreditation, without stipulation or reservation, for the next seven years. This is a tremendous accomplishment to all those involved in the hour of preparation work. A very special thank you needs to be extended to Dr. Sandy Smith and Bill Stevenson for all their work last year preparing our school for this reaccreditation. Another enormous thank you to Heather Townsend, who stepped in this year to take over the accreditation process will grace, precision, and tact. To quote the final report presented to our entire school community Thursday afternoon, "This is a good school, and on its way to being a great school." Our school is committed to double down its efforts to continuously improve and grow. I am very proud of all the accomplishments of our school and staff. Now is time to sustain our hard work, and make QSI International School of Atyrau a fantastic place where children learn and grow. QSI Atyrau’s Vision, Curriculum, and Profile of a GraduateQuality Schools International (QSI) provides its 37 schools in 31 countries with a comprehensive mission statement, curriculum, and a profile of the knowledge, skills, and character students are expected to develop. QSI calls this profile their “Exit Outcomes.” As we have had many new families join us since January we want to take a moment to review our school's vision, curriculum, and profile. A warm welcome to all the new families, we are so glad you are a part of this community! Vision of QSI Atyrau The vision of the International School of Atyrau is to prepare globally responsible citizens by providing a compassionate and engaging learning community that celebrates differences.
Please take a moment to view online the QSI mission statement, our profile, exit outcomes, and the curriculum. The profile is especially helpful in understanding the core values of every QSI school. As an extension of the Physical Education program, our students are exposed to various team sports throughout the year in friendly competition during their lunch recess time. Intramurals ended the basketball season with the Hunter team securing the final game with Infinity close behind. A strong congratulations to all the student-coaches for a well-coached basketball season! I would like to shout out a very big THANK YOU to Mr. Nick Stamper, Mr. Bill Stevenson, and Mr. Zach Montoya who were kind enough to assist in refereeing the final games. The next activity in the intramural program will bring new names to the teams and a new competition in the form of dodge ball. Hope to see you on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays @ 11:53 for the action. On Tuesday, February 12th, the girls’ basketball team had a friendly competition with the Dostyk girls’ team. It was a close score of 21 to 23. QSI demonstrated an aggressive first period and a skillful second period, though lacked the endurance for the third period allowing Dostyk to pull ahead only by 2 points. We look forward to having another chance to take on Dostyk in the near future… Stay tuned. Feeling Cool in the 6-Year-Old ClassLiteracy Week was enjoyed by all, as can be seen in the faces of those putting 100 fish crackers and counting them by 10's before eating them and writing our numerals to 100, with the 11 Year Old Class helping us in this mighty endeavor. 10's also paired with us for Reading Buddies. The 11's also taught us a card game where the sum of the value of the cards had to equal 100 before one could "lay them down" and count them toward one's point total. Sevens' Class Take Flight! At the beginning of February, the 7s class also began studying recorder and several have already reached the third or, for two of the students, even the fourth level of the program! This is incredible progress and their enthusiasm is catching! They are also allowed to take their recorders home so parents, make sure they bring them in each day that they have music. In the case of the 7s, that's Wednesday and Friday. Some students are forgetting to bring them in on their day for music and parents will be contacted if a child begins to forget their recorder two or more times in a month. For our Spring Concert, be prepared to hear tunes that the children, themselves, have composed. Some of the work involves writing multiple parts to be played simultaneously by multiple instruments. Be prepared to be amazed! Deeper Investigations in the 9-Year-Old ClassThrough Selective UnitsThe nine-year-old class is working their way through two selective units (SO). One SO has them reading and writing poetry while the second SO deals with ancient Egypt. While studying ancient Egypt, the students have learned about the major geographical features in Egypt, and how the Nile River has affected the way of life in ancient times. We also learned about the pharaoh Hatshepsut. Students were impressed that she decided to trade with her neighbors instead of conquering them. They pointed out this showed the success orientations: concern for others, kindness and politeness, and group interaction. Further, students tried to write their names using hieroglyphics. To end this SO, students will mummify a chicken and build a cardboard pyramid around it. We'll open it up in June to see what it looks like.
