Queensland Theatre Company Unveils Season 2017 and a Name Change!

Last week, Queensland Theatre Company's new artistic director Sam Strong officially revealed his plans for the company in 2017, including a name change from “Queensland Theatre Company” to just “Queensland Theatre”.

“Queensland Theatre Company was founded nearly 50 years ago. Now, it’s time for the next chapter in our story. The new name and identity reflects our commitment to the health of the state’s whole creative culture; we aim to support it, enliven it and nurture it in any way we can. In short, we aim to lead from Queensland,” he said.

Season 2017 is set to be a landmark year for Queensland Theatre. In the inaugural season of Artistic Director Sam Strong, the company will present nine standout shows.

Each of the plays in Season 2017 achieves what theatre does best – puts human experience under the microscope. We can see ourselves reeling with chaos in the workplace, enraptured in new romance, navigating the parent-child relationship, celebrating with family and wrestling with a failing marriage.

Brisbane Metro Subway System Update

To support the development of a business case, Brisbane City Council is establishing a number of project reference groups to ensure input from all key project stakeholders.

BSB has been asked by Council to sit on the River South Reference Group (RSRG).

Other reference groups include River North Reference Group and Cultural Precinct Reference Group.

The RSRG will provide a central point of contact for Council to discuss issues, concerns and suggestions for the development of Brisbane Metro.

BSB encourages members to provide their feedback and comments on Brisbane Metro by calling the BSB office on 3846 5191 or emailing admin@businesssouthbank.com.au.

BSB Thought Leadership Breakfast a Great Success!

Last week, BSB's Thought Leadership Breakfast saw some of Brisbane’s leading business people discuss the big questions about leadership and management.

Key take aways from our esteemed panel include:

  • Authenticity is important in being a leader – be yourself and be committed to ongoing learning.
  • Leaders must be able to ‘walk the talk’.
  • Create a culture where you can disagree without being disagreeable.
  • Leaders must learn from their own mistakes and be self aware.

BSB was proud to donate 50% of the profits from the event to our member charities!

Thank you to our enthusiastic audience, our panel for their fantastic insights, and our sponsors Griffith University and Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

The Connection

Jackson Teece

Name and position?

Daniel Hudson, Director

Tell us about your business/organisation?
Jackson Teece is a design firm delivering services in Architecture, Urban Design and Interior Design established in 1971. We work across many sectors specialising in Commercial, Residential, Aged Care, Seniors Living and Retail design. High profile Brisbane projects include Southpoint in Southbank and Scott Street Apartments in Kangaroo point.

What is your role at your organisation?
Principal and Director of the Brisbane office.

What are your key skills and responsibilities?
Running the Brisbane Practice, leading projects through the early design phases, engaging with clients, council and local government authorities, I have a strong team so my job is really ensuring that they have the information and resources to carry out their work in the most effective way.

How many people work at your business?
We are a medium sized design firm with approximately 70 staff across our three offices and currently 16 in our Brisbane office which is now over 10 years old. Many of our staff are specialists within their fields and we aim to maintain a high level of knowledge and ability across our whole team. We work as one firm with three offices.

What is your favourite place in the precinct?
River Quay is fantastic and one of the few locations in Brisbane where you can enjoy a drink with great food in a riverfront location.

What do you want BSB members to know about you or your business?
Perhaps that Southpoint in Southbank was designed by us. We assisted the Anthony John Group to secure the $560M project through a highly contested design competition in 2006. It was an exciting win and a great process run by Southbank Corporation. The first stage is almost complete which is the commercial retail building. Along with Flight Centre’s Headquarters it will include restaurants and retail offerings, bringing more dining options and businesses to the southern end of the precinct.

What is something people wouldn’t know about your business?
A tough question. We were part of one of the final five teams to be shortlisted for the Barangaroo Central Masterplan in Sydney among high calibre international design firms.

What has recently happened at your organisation?
John Gow (Newcastle) and I became partners in the firm.

What have you learnt lately?
How to play “Passenger” by Powderfinger….?

What do you hope to achieve in your industry?
Contribute effectively to the conversation about creating a better Brisbane as the city continues to grow into the future.

What inspires you?
Great atmosphere and experience. Whether it be created by a great example of architecture or music, or nature; a forest or diving a reef.

What are your words of wisdom?
Listen to people. As architects we learn new and important things every day. Listening to colleagues, clients and the general population is how we are able to balance our ideas, ensure our design responses are relevant and ultimately learn.
